Phone scam targets grandmas in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City police are warning people about phone scammers preying on the elderly by pretending to be a grandchild who has been in a car crash in British Columbia and needs money.

Police say they received three fraud complaints in June from elderly women. Each had received a phone call from a person who identified himself as a grandchild. In at least two the calls, the scammer did not use a name.

The caller claimed to have been in a crash and asked that $2,900 to $5,000 be wired to Vancouver -- and he didn't want the grandma to call his parents.

One woman called family and found out her grandson was not in Canada.

Police say be wary. Check out the information yourself, and call police.
