LOGAN -- Five Utah State football players face misdemeanor drug charges two weeks before practice begins.
"I am very disappointed, especially with the timing with us going into camp. It is a group of young players who made a bad decision," coach Brent Guy said. "We will handle this internally, and there will be disciplinary action."
The players allowed police to search an apartment where a neighbor reported the smell of burning marijuana on Saturday.
"They were up front and honest in their use of a small amount of marijuana," Logan Police Lt. Brad Franke said. "All were issued citations and released at the scene."
The players are receiver Kendall Fisher, 19, defensive lineman Steven Downs, 19, tailback Marcus Cross, 21 and offensive linemen Brennan McFadden and Ryan Tonnemacher, who are both 19.
A sixth player in the apartment was not charged but remains under investigation, he said.
The men are charged with possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail.
Guy, who was attending the Western Athletic Conference media day in Boise, Idaho, would not say how he planned to punish the players. The Aggies start practice Aug. 9.
Earlier this year, receiver Dionte Holloway was dismissed from the team after being arrested for marijuana possession.
Quarterback Jerod Walker was also dropped. He was accused of marijuana possession and aggravated sexual assault.
Pack picked to finish third in WAC: At Reno, Nev., A year ago, Nevada's football team was 9-3, 7-1 and won a share of the Western Athletic Conference championship.
But that was last year and things change.
This year, WAC coaches and the media covering the conference tab the Wolf Pack to finish third, behind perennials Boise State -- which shared the title last year-- and Fresno State.
Nevada coach Chris Ault says he's not surprised and agrees they are the teams to beat.
"Last year is history. It's not news. We have to go out and make news," he said.
After Nevada, the media and the coaches also agree on Hawaii, Louisiana Tech and San Jose State for fourth through sixth.
Then, it's Utah State, Idaho and New Mexico State as the media picks.
For the coaches, it's Idaho, Utah State and New Mexico State to round out the bottom three.
Clarett fires attorneys two weeks before court date: At Columbus, Ohio, two weeks before his trial on aggravated burglary and weapons charges, former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett does not have an attorney.
In a single-paragraph letter Clarett wrote on July 20, he said he fired attorneys William Settina and Robert Krapenc. They filed a motion Monday saying they do not wish to continue as Clarett's lawyers, saying he has not paid their fees and is not cooperating in his own defense.
Court documents do not list any other attorney for Clarett.
Common Pleas Judge David S. Fais scheduled a hearing for this morning to address the situation.
Clarett, 22, turned himself in on Jan. 2 to face charges of flashing a gun and robbing two people in an alley behind a bar.
