OGDEN -- On Boy Scout night at Lindquist Field, the Ogden Raptors did a good deed.
They provided Orem skipper Tom Kotchman the opportunity to earn his 1,500th victory as a manager in the minor leagues.
Actually, the Raptors did their best to prevent the Owlz from taking their eighth straight win over Ogden in 12 days, but two runs in the top of the 10th inning gave Orem a 5-3 win and No. 1,500 for Kotchman in nearly 30 years of coaching.
"I didn't think about it at all until everyone started bringing it up," said the veteran coach. "All it means is you have been around a long time, you have had your health, and obviously you've had a lot of good players."
Kotchman said he started getting the good players in 1983 when he had Roger Clemens and a player by the name of Mike Brumley, Ogden's current manager.
Those names were followed by more big names like Garret Anderson, Troy Percival, Todd Green, John Lachey, Frankie Rodriguez. Of the 40 players on the Los Angeles Angels' roster, 27 were coached by Kotchman, including his son, Casey.
"Your job at his level is to teach the kids the game on the field and off. It's a different form of school," Kotchman said. "That is the part I like, that is the part that was most conducive for my family."
When Brumley learned the significance of the victory, he expressed his congratulations.
"Good for him, I'm just the guy to get it against," he said with a smile. "I think I was No. 1,000 for Bobby Jones. I seem to move guys up the list a lot.
"No, good for Tom. He's been there a long time, does a good job. He has made his mark on the game."
Beyond Brumley, it was a pretty quiet Raptors clubhouse. Once again Ogden had its chances to beat Orem, but couldn't make the plays to pull it out.
The frustration could be summed up in the bat that Brian Ruggiano broke as he slammed it on the ground after striking out in the bottom of the ninth.
Of the Raptors' nine losses, six have come in extra innings or by one run.
Just like Thursday night, the Owlz came back from a two run deficit in late in the game to tie the game, this time at 3-3.
Ogden had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but newly acquired centerfielder Travis Vetters, who played for Ogden last year, popped out to right field.
After Orem scored two runs in the top of the 10th, including one on a wild pitch, Ogden rallied with two more runners in scoring position, but Kyle Russell struck out and Clay Calfee grounded out to end the game.
Brumley said he is glad Ogden doesn't play Orem again for a month.
"That will be good. We can see what some of these other teams got, give us some different scenarios," Brumley said. "I can't really fault the way we are playing. The effort has been outstanding. Our guys have gone out there and battled."
As for 10-1 Orem, Brumley said the Owlz are just in a good streak.
"Everything falls in, they got some rallies going," he said. "You hate to get beat on a wild pitch. That is kind of unfortunate."
Pedro Baez and Devaris Gordon each hit home runs in the loss, respectively.
Ogden plays a three game series at Idaho Falls before returning to town for a three-game series with Casper on Tuesday.
