Reno Mahe: I'm looking forward to the off-season

Happy New Year! I thought I would check back in for one more diary even though the season ended early for us.

It was nice to finish the season with a win. Only one playoff team gets to do that, so I guess there's a positive to starting the off-season at the beginning of January.

And I am enjoying my off-season. The off-season diet has begun and Philly is the place to be to start an un-diet. Hello, Tony Luke's cheesesteaks and McNaughton's home cooking. Goodbye, Lean Cuisines and egg white omelets.

I like to take a few weeks and just completely relax and do nothing before getting back on a more regimented schedule. It's probably not the healthiest way to be, but after having to weigh in and worry about keeping in shape during the season, it's nice to just let myself go a little. Not too much, just a little.

Some teams are more militant about this than others, and the Eagles tend to be a little more relaxed, but when a player is over their suggested weight, they get fined. It's usually somewhere between $250-$500 per pound, PER DAY! So if you are five pounds overweight and it takes you two weeks to get it off, you are looking at $1,200 to $2,500 A DAY in fines. Call me cheap, but a couple cheeseburgers aren't worth $2,500.

But I don't have to worry about any of that anymore since my boy P bought my little girls the Nintendo Wii for Christmas. I get the hype now; that thing is FUN. And my arms may have been a little sore after boxing all day, but I'm much too manly to admit it.

Speaking of boxing, my Uncle Vai (Sikahema) has a charity boxing event on the 19th of this month that I'm psyched about. I even get to be the cut man! He was supposed to be boxing Danny Bonaduce, the "Partridge Family" guy. Bonaduce has some reality series for celebrity boxing and when they had originally approached my uncle to do it, they didn't realize that he was a former Golden Gloves. So a couple weeks ago, Bonaduce punked out. But Vai will still be boxing some radio DJ out here.

They had a press conference for publicity and Vai was on point. He has been training for a few months now and he's in great shape. He is probably down to his college weight. No one can talk trash like my Uncle Vai -- he told the other guy's trainer that "your boy doesn't need a trainer, he needs a mortician!" He also invited the crowd to do laundry on his stomach.

I'm excited to get back to Utah. This past year was a big eye opener for me and it was kind of cool to finally feel like I'll be OK after football is over, which may be sooner than later. Same song and dance for this coming year -- I could play another three years, or I could be done. But there's no place like Utah to sit and wait.
