Lone Peak is a lot of what Pleasant Grove would like to be -- and most likely will be in a very short time.
But for now, the old Knights showed why they are the best team in the state, defeating the younger Vikings 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 and snapping Pleasant Grove's five-game win streak Thursday night at Pleasant Grove in Region 7 volleyball.
The senior-laden Lone Peak juggernaut managed to stay calm against a solid Viking squad that came fired up out of the gate. But Lone Peak and their experienced hitters slowly wore down the Vikings, making a tight contest look like an easy sweep.
"Playing P.G. is always a fun match for us because it is a rival match," said Lone Peak coach Deanna Meyer. "That could be one of the reasons it was so close. It's always fun, we enjoy coming to play these guys because we know it will be competitive and we were looking to play a game like that."
Game 1 was a handful for the Knights, as Pleasant Grove seemed unintimidated by Lone Peak's undefeated record. The game was very close, with the Vikings' initial 3-0 lead being the largest lead either team could manage to hold. Viking outside hitter Brooke McAllister couldn't be stopped slamming eight kills, including a timely tip that tied the score 22-22. Two points later the game was still tied, but a Viking serving error and a kill by senior Faith Tusieseina gave the game to Lone Peak (18-0, 7-0).
Junior Ashton Gray had 10 kills on 15 attempts in the middle spot for Lone Peak, in addition to 2.5 blocks and an ace. Kylie Heaps had 15 digs while Lacey Laycock dished 31 assists and three aces.
Pleasant Grove's McAllister went quiet after her game one outburst, adding four more kills for a total of 12 on the night to go with three aces.
With McAllister seeing little opportunity to score points, Pleasant Grove struggled to get in an offensive groove, particularly during the midway point of the final two games. The Knights used a 10-2 run in game two to turn a two-point deficeit into a 22-16 lead, then ran off ten straight points in game three to go up 16-11 after being down 11-6.
"I think that my team is pretty experienced," said Meyer, "and they understand how to compete and how to stay level-headed. If things don't go their way, they work hard knowing things will turn back around."
For Pleasant Grove (9-10, 5-3), 6-foot-6 sophomore Jennifer Hansom added seven kills and senior Sarah Clement had five kills. With Clement and starting libero Brandy Bowman the only starting seniors on the Viking team, Pleasant Grove is likely to quickly become just as dominating as the team the Vikings faced Thursday night.
• American Fork def. Lehi 3-1: At Lehi, Marci Gray had 15 kills and 32 digs to help American Fork win a back-and-forth Region 4 match 24-26, 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 over Lehi.

The Bruins trailed 10-1 in Game 3, then went on 11-4 run to trail just 14-12. Junior setter Amy Conrad stepped to the service line and served nine straight points, seven of them aces, to give the Bruins (14-4, 7-2) a 21-14 lead.
• Orem def. Timpview 3-0: At Orem, Ella Moe and April Robins had nine kills each to lead Orem (9-6, 7-2) past Timpview (0-11, 0-8) 25-12, 25-12, 25-19 in Region 7.
