No. 15: Devin Mahina, BYU tight end
Note: As the final month before the BYU football team starts fall camp ticks away, here is Jared Lloyd's list of the Top 25 individuals who will have the biggest impact on the success of the Cougars in 2014.
Quick ... name all of the great BYU tight ends.
I bet names like Brown, Hudson, Mili, Lewis, Harline, Pitta and George were on that list, although you might've added others.
It's no surprise that the Cougars have had some of their best teams when those athlete were on the field.
The tight end has always been a crucial role for good BYU teams and that's why the Cougars really need Mahina to be that impact guy.
Last year's numbers were barely noticeable for the senior (seven catches, 64 yards), but this year has to be more productive. Plus, he needs to do a lot of the blocking work that doesn't get noticed.
He said at media day that he'll be working a lot with his hand on the ground, but he also said he understands the importance of being able to make things happen from there.
If Mahina catches more than 25 passes this year and can block efficiently, that will be a huge boost for the Cougar offense.
