The 2015 BYU football scheduling puzzle just got a little clearer and the Cougars also picked up another series with an up-and-coming program.
BYU announced Wednesday morning a home-and-home series with Northern Illinois (in Provo in 2018 and in Illinois in 2020) and also a single home game against Idaho State on Oct. 24, 2015.
Other sources said that the Cougar game against Cincinnati in 2015 had been moved to Oct. 17, which means the scheduled game with Southern Miss in 2015 has probably either been postponed or cancelled.
BYU had been slated to play only five home games in 2015, but the addition of Idaho State would be the sixth, to go along with contests against Boise State, East Carolina, Cincinnati, UConn and Fresno State.
I don't mind any of these three games, although there is only minor cachet to the Northern Illinois brand unless the Huskies continue to be elite. I'm not certain that will last over the next five years.
The Idaho State game won't excite anyone but it's a home game, and sometimes the Cougars just do what they have to do.
In my mind, this isn't a huge announcement like some of the others, but it's a routine scheduling notification for BYU and fills the holes a little more.
Here is the complete release from BYU:
"PROVO, Utah (July 30, 2014) — Brigham Young University director of athletics Tom Holmoe today announced future football games versus Northern Illinois and Idaho State.
"BYU and Northern Illinois will meet at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Oct. 27, 2018, with the second game being played at Huskie Stadium in Dekalb, Illinois, on Oct. 24, 2020. The 2018 contest will be the first meeting between the Cougars and the Huskies of the Mid-American Conference. NIU has won at least 11 games in each of the past four seasons while compiling a 46-10 record and capturing four-straight MAC West titles.
"The Cougars will face the Bengals of Idaho State at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, on Oct. 24, 2015. BYU and Idaho State have met five previous times in football, the first being in Pocatello, Idaho, on Nov. 4, 1932, and the most recent contest in Provo on Nov. 16, 2013. BYU owns a 5-0 record in the series.
