Is BYU football the 38th best team in the country?

The first Amway Coaches Poll was released Thursday morning and that's where the Cougars came in, tallying 18 votes to put them in the "Others receiving votes" category.

The only BYU opponent to be ranked in the Top 25 the opening poll was Texas, which is slotted into the No. 24 spot.

Other foes in the "Others receiving votes" group are Central Florida (28th with 102 votes), Boise State (39th with 13 votes) and Houston (tied for 48th with two votes).

I don't put too much stock in preseason polls, although I do admit that usually to climb very high when you start low you have to have a lot of teams in front of you lose.

Still, the Cougars are on the national radar, even if they are just a blip.

Not surprisingly, Florida State, Alabama and Oklahoma are the top three teams.
