Who's the next great BYU quarterbackfi

Judging from the BYU recruiting class of 2008, he might still be out there somewhere.

So far, BYU has offered a scholarship to only one quarterback in the Class of 2008, and that's Kevin Prince (6-3 195) of Crespi Carmelite (Calif.).

Prince tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Sept. 4 and will need nine months to recover. Before the injury, Prince was being also being recruited by UCLA, Washington, Boise State, Nevada and Utah.

Two local quarterbacks are putting up huge numbers as high school seniors and could get a look from BYU. Christian Stewart (6-2 180) of Timpanogos High has thrown for 2,136 yards and 23 touchdowns in six games, an average of 356 yards per game. Rhen Richard (6-1 185) of Union High has thrown for 1,621 yards and 19 touchdowns in six games.

Two other Utah prep athletes who might get some attention from BYU include Dixie High running back Nate Carter (5-9 195), who has rushed for 784 yards and 11 touchdowns (156 yards per game) and Jordan wide receiver Cody Raymond (5-9, 175), who leads the state in receiving with 61 catches for 833 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Scout.com is reporting that O'Neil Chambers (6-3, 205 WR) of Harmony High School in Florida has placed Purdue as his No. 1 school after a visit to the campus last week. BYU is also interested in Chambers, who leads his area in receiving with 15 catches for 319 yards after four games. Chambers is expected to trip to BYU in January. His teammate, Kedron Paul (5-8 153 RB/DB) attended BYU's football camp along with Chambers this summer. Harmony is coached by former BYU wide receiver Tyler Anderson.

Remember mefi Mangum Mauga, a 6-1, 280-pound defensive end from Grossmont Junior College in California, was on BYU's 2007 commitment list but won't enroll until winter semester of 2008. Maugu, who missed the 2007 season because of injury, is making up for lost time this year. After five games, Mauga is second on the team in tackles (26) with 12 solo tackles and six tackles for loss.

Making up their mind: BYU has offered scholarships to two highly recruited linemen who haven't made their decisions as of yet: Hamani Stevens (6-2, 290) of Hemet (Calif.) and Max TuiotiMariner (6-3, 290) of Corona (Calif.). Stevens is also being recruited by UCLA, Oregon and Michigan State and Mariner by Arizona, Cal, Colorado and USC.

Getting his kicks: Bingham's Justin Sorensen (6-2, 215 K) has an ongoing state record of 25 career field goals. In Bingham's 40-6 victory over Kearns last week, Sorensen kicked five extra points and converted a 45-yard field goal. BYU's top commit, TE Austin Holt (6-6 ,228) caught a 29-yard touchdown pass for Bingham, which is 6-1.

That's more like it: Class of 2009 commit Adam Timo (6-1, 170 RB) came back from a disappointing performance against Pine View to rush for 240 yards and four touchdowns in Snow Canyon's 49-29 victory over Hurricane. Timo scored three touchdowns in the first quarter on runs of 35, 16 and 19 yards and added a 24-yard score in the second quarter.

Relieved: Linebacker/running back commit Jerry Bruner (6-3 225) of Vancouver (Wash.) Evergreen had a rough game in his team's 41-14 victory over Heritage. Bruner scored on a 2-yard run early in the game but was taken to the hospital by ambulance at halftime after suffering a big hit in the second quarter. The Columbian reported Bruner returned to the stadium to celebrate with his teammates after the game.

Through the air: Jray Galea'i (6-0, 170), a quarterback/defensive back commit for 2009, led Kahuku (Hawaii) to a 27-7 win over Farrington. Galea'i threw three touchdown passes as Kahuku defeated Farrington for the tenth time in the past 11 meetings.

"The thing with Jray, once he settles down, he's a great athlete out there," Kahuku head coach Reggie Torres told the Honolulu Star Tribune. "He's getting more confident in the pocket, and our linemen did great."

Junior college news: Snow College beat No. 12 Mesa 48-17 on Saturday to retain its No. 1 ranking in the junior college polls. Tevita Hola (6-1, 311 DT) is a four-star BYU oral commitment.

BYU commit Tolu Moala (6-1, 230 LB) had three tackles (two solo) in El Camino's 31-24 victory over Saddleback. Highly regarded defensive end Simi Kuli (6-4, 270) is among players BYU is also interested in and he posted five tackles (three solos) with a tackle for loss.

Extra points: Timpview pounded Region 7 foe Orem 49-7 and BYU commit Michael Alisa (6-2, 210 RB/LB) scored on touchdown runs of 8 and 43 yards in the victory. ... WR/DB commit Jake Murphy (6-5 215) of American Fork has seven TDs receiving and one interception return for a score. He's caught 19 passes for 314 yards. ... Brock Stringham (6-6, 280 OL) and his Mountain Vista (Colo.) team keeps winning, downing Rangeview 29-12 to move to 5-0 in 2007. ... Atem Bol (6-2, 205 WR) of Bell (Texas) had two catches for 28 yards in his team's 27-21 victory over Grand Prairie ... Daniel Sorensen (6-2, 201 S) scored a touchdown in Colton's (Calif.) 52-14 rout of Marina Huntington Beach. ... Sete Pohahau (5-11, 200 RB) rushed for 146 yards on 15 carries but was held out of the end zone as Menlo-Atherton edged Aragon (Calif.) 21-14.
