A week after losing its first match of the season, the No. 3-ranked BYU men's volleyball team rebounded on Friday, dropping Pacific in three straight games, 30-21, 30-23, 31-29.
Ivan Perez led the Cougars (13-1, 8-1 MPSF) with 14 kills and five blocks. Russell Holmes added nine kills, but paced the BYU defense with a match-high seven blocks. Trent Sorensen talled six blocks and Jonathan Charette had five blocks. The Cougars out-blocked the Tigers 15.5-4.
BYU and Pacific will square off again today at the Smith Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
• Swimming: At Oklahoma City, Okla., the BYU women continued to lead and the men moved up to third at the MWC championships.
Freshman Rachel Grant set a new MWC record in the 400-yard individual medley for the Cougars, finishing in a time of 4:18.94, breaking a record set by UNLV's Julie Babin in 2004. Natasha Menzies got her second indivudla championship, winning the 200 free in 1:49.09.
The BYU men got their first individual winner, as senior Neal Hamilton swam a time of 3:53.26 in the 400 IM.
The BYU women currently have 544 points with UNLV at 432. UNLV is the leader on the men's side with 575 points, with Wyoming second at 473 and BYU 449.5.
• Track: At Air Force Academy, Colo., two BYU individuals and the two distance medley relay teams earned titles at the MWC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Senior Bryce Bergen won the high jump (6 feet, 9.75 inches). Junior Justin Palmer won the heptathlon with 5,171 points. The women's distance medley relay taem (Anna Sperry, Stacy Slight, Jenna Lowder, Carlee-Clark Platt) ran 12:31.50 to take the title. The men's distance medley team (Dustin Bybee, Keith Jensen, Drew Foster, Kyle Perry) cruised to victory in 10:15.74.
The No. 5 men's team is in the lead after Day 2 of the MWC Championships with 64 points, and the women's team is in fifth place with 23 points.
BYU's Brandon Hebbert ws fifth in the 5,000-meter, with Wyoming's Mark Korir winning, and Cecily Lemon was the highest finisher in that event for the BYU women at fifth (17:56.92). Justin Palmer was sixth in the men's long jump (21-8.0) and Mindy Robins was ninth for the women (18-5.25). Ashley McAllister was third in the women's pole vault at 12-11.5.
• Baseball: At Spokane, Wash., one slipped away and the other one got away as BYU's baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Gonzaga, 7-6 and 12-5.
BYU (1-5) was ahead most of Game 1 and trailed 3-2 midway in Game 2 before it got out of hand. Gonzaga (3-4) hosts the Cougars in a single game today.
In Friday's first game, the Cougars were never behind with Jordan Muir on the mound, but Gonzaga took advantage when he left the game in the eighth with a 5-3 lead. Mark McKimmy blasted a three-run homer to put the Zags on top, 7-5.
• Women's basketball: The BYU women's basketball team (13-12, 7-6 MWC) is at Air Force today in a game scheduled to start at 2 p.m. It will be broadcast live on 96.7 FM. BYU beat the Falcons (9-16, 3-10) 54-47 in Provo earlier this season.
• Lacrosse: The No. 1-rnked BYU men's lacrosse team (2-2) hosts No. 7 Michigan (3-0) today at 1 p.m. at the Richards Building Turf Field. The game will be broadcast on a tape-delay basis at 5 p.m. on BYU-TV.
• Tennis: Playing in the last match of the night, freshman Elizaveta Ezhova's rallied from a 6-2 first-set loss to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-4 to clinch BYU's 4-3 victory over visiting Nevada.
The Cougar men fell 7-0 to Arizona State in Tempe.
• Softball: At Tempe, Ariz., the BYU softball swept its opening games of the Wilson/Demarini Invitational in Tempe Ariz., defeating Drake, 2-1, and Creighton, 1-0. The Cougars are now 11-5 on the season.
