Daily Herald Sports Editor and BYU football beat writer Darnell Dickson picks the Mountain West Conference games:
SACRAMENTO STATE (1-0) AT COLORADO STATE (0-1), 1:30 P.M.
Sac State (FCS) beat up on Humboldt State (NAIA) last week but if the CSU coaches watched any of Cal Poly over San Diego State, they will be wary. The Rams ran the ball pretty well against Colorado so expect to see a lot of Gartrell Johnson and Kyle Bell against the Hornets.
• Darnell sez: Colorado State 27, Sacramento State 10
SAN DIEGO STATE (0-1) AT NOTRE DAME (0-0), 1:30 P.M. (NBC)
The loss to Cal Poly isn't quite so shocking when you consider the Mustangs (I had to look up the mascot) have won two of the past three games with the Aztecs. Things are not looking very good for SDSU this week against what the media is hoping ... er, telling us is a better Irish team that last season.
• Darnell sez: Notre Dame 28, San Diego State 7
AIR FORCE (1-0, 0-0) AT WYOMING (1-0, 0-0), 1:30 P.M. (CBS-C)
Air Force rolled over SUU last week while Wyoming was struggling with Ohio (but winning anyway). This one is a toss up, but I'll go with the ball control of the Falcons.
• Darnell sez: Air Force 24, Wyoming 20
TEXAS A&M (0-1) AT NEW MEXICO (0-1), 3 P.M.
Wow. Texas A&M lost to Arkansas State 18-14 in College Station last week. How bad can the Aggies be? Bad enough to lose to an offensively weak Lobos team in Albuquerque.
• Darnell sez: New Mexico 20, Texas A&M 17
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN (1-0) AT TCU (1-0), 5 P.M.
Stephen F. Austin (FCS) beat Langston (who?) 56-19 last week. Google to the rescue: Langston is an NAIA school in Oklahoma. The Lions will be chopped down to size by the Frogs, who dominated New Mexico last week.
• Darnell sez: TCU 31, Stephen F. Austin 10
UNLV (1-0, 0-0) AT UTAH (1-0, 0-0), 6 P.M. (THE MTN.)
A great win for Utah (and the conference) over Michigan last week. We all know what happened last year after the Utes battered UCLA; they went down to Vegas and got shut out 27-0. If there's one thing Kyle Whittingham can do is motivate his team when he feels they've been slighted (remember last year's Wyoming game?) Last year UNLV running back Frank Summers said he thought Utah was "afraid" to tackle him. Rebels are in trouble.
• Darnell sez: Utah 44, UNLV 21
NO. 16 BYU (1-0) AT WASHINGTON (0-0), 1 P.M. (FSN)
Very big game, maybe the biggest of Bronco Mendenhall's career. BYU has never won in Seattle and hasn't beaten a BCS team on the road since 2001 (Mississippi). If the Cougars have taken care of their fumbling problems, this one shouldn't be close against a team and coach under fire.
• Darnell sez: BYU 42, Washington 20
• Last Week: 7-1 (.875)
• Overall: 7-1 (.875)
