Timeout.
Utah Valley State coach Dick Hunsaker had seen enough.
Down 12-0 after just two and a half minutes of Tuesday nights home opener against Troy, Hunsaker called for a timeout after watching Troy hit four straight 3-pointers to start the game.
"I just told them we're fine," Hunsaker said. "We talked about them hitting a streak and that it was going to happen. I told them to keep our composure and that the game lasts 40 minutes."
Message sent and received.
UVSC tightened up its defense and Troy cooled off following the timeout as the Wolverines morphed into a different team and ran Troy out of the McKay Events Center with a 72-51 win.
Following the early timeout, UVSC held Troy to just 11 points for the rest of the first half on 3-of-24 shooting (12 percent) and the Wolverines forced 12 turnovers compared to just one for UVSC.
"At the first of the game they just hit some shots and every team's going to do that," said UVSC guard Josh Olsen. "We just played defense the rest of the time and it worked out. I think it's important to keep your head and keep your composure. A lot of times you can get down on yourselves when a team jumps out on you like that, but we just took the shots we were given and they went in."
Before Utah Valley State could work up a sweat, the Wolverines trailed 12-0 after four different Trojans hit three-pointers to start the game.
Following the timeout, Olsen broke the ice by hitting one of seven first-half 3-pointers. UVSC finally dug out of its hole by the 12-minute mark when Richard Troyer hit a 3-pointer to give the Wolverines their first lead of the game at 16-15.
A Matt Komenda basket followed by another Troyer 3-pointer pushed the UVSC lead to 21-15. Ryan Toolson followed with a 3-pointer to give the Wolverines a 24-15 lead.
UVSC used a surge late in the half to built its biggest lead of the game. Komenda muscled up a shot inside the paint between two Troy players that went in.
After Troy missed the front end of a one-and-one, Kevin Woods zipped a pass to Joe Walker inside the key. Walker slammed it home to give UVSC a 35-20 lead with 12 seconds left in the half.
Troy's Jerome Odem hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to trim the lead to 35-23, but it wouldn't matter because UVSC used a 18-5 run in the second half to put the game away.
"Any time you can take away from the other team's momentum is great," Olsen said. "They're a heck of a shooting team. If they start missing some shots and we play some defense we can take away their momentum than that's what we•re going to try to do."
Toolson started the run with a three-pointer. Brady followed with a basket inside and after Troy's Trayce Macon answered, Troyer and Komenda hit back-to-back baskets. Olsen and Toolson added a pair of free throws and Olsen continued with the theme of the night and hit a 3-pointer to give UVSC a 56-32 lead with 12:40 remaining.
The only suspense remaining came from the 3-point line. Just how many would UVSC makefi
UVSC broke the school (NCAA) record for 3-pointers attempted with 34 and tied the most 3-pointers made with 12. Toolson led the way with five, Troyer had four and Olsen had three.
Toolson was one of five Wolverines to score in double figures. He led UVSC with 17 and handed out nine assists. Troyer added 14, Olsen had 11, Komenda finished with 12, and Brady had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
O'Darien Bassett led Troy with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Troy made 12-of-35 three-pointers (34 percent), but shot just 31 percent from the field.
The win upped UVSC's record to 2-2 on the year, while Troy dropped to 1-2.
UVSC will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when the Wolverines host Great Falls in a 2 p.m. tipoff.
