Each week during the college football season the Daily Herald will highlight the performances of high school and junior college athletes that have committed to BYU or are being recruited by the Cougars.

One to go: BYU's top prospect for the Class of 2010, Skyline (Wash.) quarterback Jake Heaps (6-2 190), was 21 of 37 for 252 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead his team to a 24-21 win over Ferris, pushing the Spartans into the Class 4A state title game on Friday against city rival Issaquah. Heaps threw what turned out to be the game-winner - a 9-yard touchdown pass to Gino Simone - in the third quarter and the Skyline defense did the rest.

Skyline (13-0), which has won 27 games in a row and is ranked seventh in the USA Today Super 25, beat Issaquah 38-0 on Oct. 17.

From the Islands: BYU's top prospect for the Class of 2009, Manti Te'o (6-2 225 LB), and his Punahou teammates are headed to Hawaii's Division I State Championship Game.

Punahou (11-1) defeated Farrington 35-28 in front of 10,083 at Aloha Stadium on Friday. Te'o did have a fumble that led to a Farrington score but also contributed a 16-yard TD reception. He finished with 10 carries for 34 yards and two receptions for 27 yards.

Punahou will play Leilehua (11-2) in the championship game after the Mules edged Kahuku 17-0 in overtime in the other semifinal. BYU commit BYU commit Jray Galea'i (6-0 170 S) had a 38-yard reception for Kahuku.

• On to the final: BYU prospect Kyle Van Noy (6-4 202 LB) and undefeated McQueen (Nev.) advanced to the state title game with a 38-0 victory over No. 2 Manogue in the Northern 4A Regional final at Damonte Ranch. The Lancers scored on six of their first eight drives in winning their 12th region title in the past 26 years. Van Noy had three catches for 48 yards and two touchdowns and helped hold Manogue to just 106 total yards of offense.

"We just proved that in the North no one can touch us, and we're going to take it to whoever it is next week," Van Noy told the Reno Gazette Journal.

McQueen's opponent in the championship game will be Southern 4A Region winner Palo Verde, which beat Las Vegas High 42-21 last week.

Coming up big: BYU commit Mitch Mathews (6-5 195 WR) had a huge game in the Oregon Class 6A semifinals, grabbing six balls for 132 yards and three touchdowns to lead Southridge to a 44-14 win over Beaverton. Mathews, who missed most of the regular season with a foot injury, had scoring receptions of 37, 22 and 10 yards as Southridge advanced to the 6A championship game.

Southridge will face Jesuit, a 28-26 winner over Lake Oswego. Earlier this season, Jesuit scored a 19-16 overtime victory over Southridge.

This is new: Finally a close game for Oaks Christian (Calif.) -- but still a victory.

Oaks Christian had outscored its previous 11 opponents 553-69 but had to scratch and claw to a 21-0 victory over Pioneer Valley in the a CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division quarterfinal game on Friday.

BYU prospect Zac Stout (6-1 215 LB, Class of 2010) had eight tackles and helped hold Pioneer Valley to just 72 yards of total offense. Oaks Christian (12-0) faces Morro Bay in the semifinals on Friday.

End of the line: Palm Desert (Calif.) defensive back and BYU commit Trevor Bateman (5-11 165) watched a tie game disappear in a second half onslaught, losing to No. 1 Citrus Hill 56-28 in the CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division quarterfinals. Palm Desert led 14-0 in the first half after Bateman scored on a 30-yard run and added a 6-yard scoring reception. The score was tied at 21-all at the half.

The Aztecs finished the season at 9-3.
