BYU spikers 1-2 at Santa Barbara tournament; track athletes do well

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- BYU's No. 9-ranked men's volleyball team swept Pacific 30-28, 30-18, 30-26 on Saturday in its final match of the 45th Annual UC Santa Barbara/Elephant Bar Collegiate Invitational. With the win the Cougars secured an eighth-place finish in the tournament and improved to 1-2 on the season.

"It was good to play and compete and to win our last match in this tournament," said BYU head coach Shawn Patchell. "We definitely had some rust after the five week break. This tournament was important to help us to get back to where we were a month ago."

Junior outside hitter Andrew Stewart led the Cougars with 13 kills and six blocks, while Mat Taylor added 10 kills of his own. Kent Tuttle recorded a match-high five digs.

On Friday, the Cougars suffered back-to-back losses to No. 8 Stanford and No. 6 UC Irvine.

In the Cougars' morning match, and season opener, the team suffered a 30-25, 30-24, 30-18 sweep at the hands of the Cardinal.

With the loss BYU moved into the second round, facing UC Irvine, a team the Cougars defeated in four games at the BYU Tournament in December. This time around the Anteaters pulled ahead to win a close 30-27 fourth game to clinch the 30-28, 32-30, 29-31, 30-27 match victory.

Up next the Cougars hold their home opener against Cal Baptist on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. MT in the Smith Fieldhouse. The team will also host Lewis University on Jan. 17.

• BYU/UVU track: At Provo, Athletes from BYU, Utah, Utah Valley, Weber State and Southern Utah participated in the annual BYU Invitational indoor meet.

"It is usually a low-key event, but our athletes took it seriously and the results showed," said BYU throwing coach Dick Legas. "Most of our marks would be good enough to get us into conference, which is incredible considering it is the first event of the year."

For the BYU women, Deezbaa Whaley had the fourth-best throw in BYU history to win the weight throw (57-0.25). Junior Amy Menlovehit a national qualifying marks in the long jump (20-1.75) and in the pentathlon (4,048). Mindy Neeley-McClurkin had a national qualifying mark in the pentathlon (3,823) and won the 60 meters (7.62).

Former Spanish Fork stars Nachelle and Natalie Stewart, now freshmen at BYU, also shown. Nachelle took first in the 300m (39.66), while Natalie won the 400m (55.10) and they teamed up for a meet record in the 4x322m relay (2:54.71) with sister Diane Stewart and Menlove.

Craig Poole, who is entering his 29th year as head coach of the women's track team, was pleased with the results.

"This meet was without question the best opening meet we have ever had," Poole said. "I couldn't have been happier. I thought it was an all-around great effort, with everyone performing at a very high level."

BYU men's track head coach Mark Robinson was equally impressed by his team's achievements.

"Today was another good day," Robinson said. "I was very pleased with the way our athletes performed today. For our first week of competition this was an accomplishment for us."

In the triple jump, freshman Aaron Powell set a new meet record with a distance of 49-3.5. Freshman Kyle Mills was second (43-9.75). Trevor Heiner won the high jump (6-8.75), with teammate Wes Collett second (6-4,75). Kyle Perry placed first in the mile (4:12.24), with teammates Miles Bailey (4:12.41) and Jason Witt (4:16.25) second and third, respectively. Freshman Rhyan Atrice won the 400m (48.65), followed by teammate Bryan Payne (49.17). Drew Foster won the 800m (1:55.48) and Brandon Hebbert was first in the 3,000m (8:30.42), followed by teammates Regan Frey (8:37.57) and Nate Ogden (8:38.68).

Utah Valley athletes also had good showings at the meet.

"We could not have asked for any more out of our opening meet of the season," UVU track associate head coach Kirke Adamson said. "Everybody came through and met a lot of their personal goals for today's meet. Our performances today are setting us up in a great spot for the remainder of the season especially in our inaugural year in the Great West Conference."

UVU freshman Michael McPherson broke the school's heptathlon record with 3,891 points, junior Andrew Graham broke Stig Robertson's record in the 60m hurdles (8.31, second). Junior Jessica Wortley broke Mariama Salifu's record in the women's 300m (41.40), and on Friday junior Tiera Zaugg shattered the school record in the women's pentathlon.

"It is just great to break four school records in the opening meet of the season," Adamson said. "It is especially great to see Jessica beat Mariama Salifu's previous record as Salifu is a member of the Ghana National Team's 4x100-meter relay."

In the 300m, the UVU men had four top-10 finishers and the women five. Freshman Logan McNeil was second in the men's event (35.82), with Andrew Graham fourth, Brent Fogt seventh and Jorden Pope ninth. For the women, Wortley was fifth, with Chelsea Baker sixth, Zandrea Nelson seventh, Megan Brown eighth and Tiera Zaugg ninth. Mike Fogt was fourth in the 60m (7.03) and Karinne Bently was second in the 800m (2:18.97), with teammates Shelise Walker and Kalina Zufelt third and fourth, respectively.

• UVU wrestling: At Orem, Utah Valley University's wrestling team crowned two champions and had two more second place finishes Saturday as all four of the Wolverines varsity grapplers who competed made the finals at the second annual UVU Open.

Sophomore Casen Eldredge won the 184-pound tournament while freshman Adam Fager won the 197-pound tournament.

"We were very pleased with our overall performance today," UVU coach Greg Williams said. "We had a good turnout and also very good competition here today as well. It was a full day of wrestling and our varsity team is definitely progressing very nicely this season."

Utah Valley welcomed athletes from such school's as Iowa State, Oklahoma, Boise State, Wyoming, Cal State Bakersfield, Western Wyoming, Northwest Wyoming, Western State, Grand Canyon, and Menlo College.

The Wolverines had only four varsity wrestlers that competed at the open as a number of others missed the tournament as they were out nursing injuries. In the final round on Saturday, UVU ended finishing 2-2 overall. Eldredge won the championship match by a major decision, as he dominated in his match over Lj Helbig, unattached. Fager won the 197-pound title defeating Ali Bannout from Menlo College.

Utah Valley sophomore Justin Morrill (149 fell in the championship bout 4-3 in a very tight contest to Jared Hately, unattached. With the loss Morrill placed second at the open. Also falling in the finals and finishing in second place was freshman Brad Darrington, sho lost 14-5 to Victor Carazo, unattached.

Nick Flores, a UVU redshirt wrestling unnattached, finished second at 125 pounds, falling to Jose Hernandez of Menlo College 5-4.
