The next time Utah Valley State wins, it will be a record.

In fact, every win from here on out will set a new Division I record for the women's basketball team.

UVSC beat Texas-Pan American 70-52 on Saturday afternoon to improve its record to 15-7 and match last year's win total.

The Wolverines have three more games to try to set a new record. UVSC will play at New Jersey Institute of Technology and at Chicago State before finishing up the year against Cal-State Bakersfield at the McKay Event Center, where the Wolverines are 11-0 this year.

"We mentioned that (matching the record for wins) in the locker room. We just tied that and now we have an opportunity to make some more history," said UVSC coach Cathy Nixon. "That's something we mentioned as we recruited the kids, that they would have a chance to be part of history and they've helped to build that. In many ways, we're achieving a level of success and education of where our program is. This season certainly has been a success so far with the quality wins that we've had. I think these kids have done a good job in lifting our program to the level of respect that we've be hoping for."

• Marvin tops 1,000 point mark: Junior guard Sandy Marvin was presented a game ball prior to the team's game against Texas-Pan American on Saturday afternoon. Thursday night, Marvin scored her 1,000th career point with five minutes left in the first half, naturally on a 3-point shot.

Marvin is now second all-time in (Division I) scoring at UVSC with 1,043 points for an average of 13.5 points per game. Junior center Robyn Fairbanks is the all-time leading scorer with 1,668 points (21.1 ppg game) and

• Toolson cashing in on free throws:Ryan Toolson made 13-of-13 free throws Saturday night in the team's 99-89 win over Chicago State in overtime, but that isn't news. It's only news when Toolson misses a free throw.

This year he has made an incredible 134-of-140 for .957 percent. Toolson made 44 in a row earlier in the season.

Last year Toolson led the nation in free throw shooting by making 96-of-99 shots for 97 percent.

"Really, I got my rhythm through all those free throws I was able to shoot," Toolson explained. "Usually the team comes down on me and doubles me but they were too busy keeping their eyes on (Richard) Troyer and (Jordan) Brady who all did a very good job so I got some open shots."

• Softball team learning the art of one-run game: With a break here or there -- actually, with a total of three breaks -- Utah Valley's softball team could be 5-0 instead of 2-3.

The Wolverines lost their third one-run game of the year in the Red Desert Classic tournament over the weekend in St. George, when Wisconsin held off UVSC 4-3. At least the Wolverines can't say they don't know how to win close game. They did beat Idaho State 5-4.

"I was thrilled. We were in every game and we outscored out opponents," coach Todd Fairbourne said. "Last year we gave up over 30 runs in the five-game tournament, and two years ago we gave up over 20 runs in one game. This year we gave up 20 runs for the tournament."

One area in particular that pleased Fairbourne was the team's fielding percentage of .979. Not bad for a team that hadn't been outside prior to the tournament.

Meghan Woodworth came out of the gates swinging. She hit .438 for the five games to lead the team and drove in six runs. She also led the team in stolen bases with four in five attempts.

• Bramwell makes her Wolverine debut: Former Timpanogos High School record holder Alli Bramwell made her UVSC debut over the weekend and by all indications, she's going to fit in just fine.

Bramwell, a sophomore transfer from Snow College, had both of Utah Valley's wins over the weekend. She went 2-1, with a 3.26 ERA. In 19 innings of work she allowed 18 hits, gave up eight walks and sat down 12 batters via the nasty dazzle.

"Alli really stepped it up. She came up huge," Fairbourne said. "I think she has add a few miles an hour to her velocity, which has helped. If she continue to pitch like that, then I think we'll be better than I thought."

• Murphy to speak at Wolverine Club luncheon: Former Major League MVP Dale Murphy, a seven-time all-star will be the keynote speak at the Wolverine Club luncheon today at noon in the South Presidential Suite at the McKay Events Center.
