It's game day, approximately eight months since the last time the Cougars took the football field for real.
What's changed? A lot, including the fact that I'm actually watching the Cougars for my job. No more sneaking looks at my computer while covering Nebraska football. Yeah, I did that. I covered BYU football for 13 years, and it was a hard habit to break.
So, what will happen tonight? First games are hard to predict, and adding the fact that there's a new coaching staff and system at UConn makes it even more difficult. But here's what I expect:
BYU will get off to a fast start. I see that happening because the more experienced Cougar offense will settle in much faster than UConn.
I expect BYU to try and establish a running game, but the best option for running will still be Taysom Hill making big plays on his own. The Cougars have struggled to score points in road openers, but I see BYU's offense will be pretty potent, though turnovers and penalties will end several drives.
Defensively, I see the Cougars very active but they will have a few busted coverages. The secondary is just unsettled enough for that to happen.
Overall, I see an exciting but sloppy game on both sides of the field. And I see BYU coming out with a victory.
Darnell sez: BYU 27, UConn 17.
