I had a good discussion with BYU defensive coordinator Nick Howell on Tuesday and he was quite confident in how the Cougar defense will perform when it lines up for real at UConn on Aug. 29.
You'd expect him to say that (what else was he going to say?) but I also think he believes it. Yeah, BYU is replacing some key players (Van Noy, Sorensen, Manumaleuna, Unga, Hadley) but Howell believes great competition in camp has led to better depth.
So what happens in Game 1?
"We’re gonna stop the run and try to dictate to them after we stop the run," Howell said. "We’ve had a plan for five or six years. That’s the plan and we're not going to vary from it. The kids know exactly what they have to do."
Defensive end turned linebacker Bronson Kaufusi said the Cougars are just reloading. I'm interested to see if the 6-foot-7, 260-pounder can lock down one side of the field. Van Noy did that, but in a very different way.
I do know this: Kaufusi is a legit athletic freak. No one that size should be that nimble and quick unless they're a power forward.
What? Oh, right. Kaufusi did play on the BYU basketball team. That explains it.
