For the only time this year, Utah Valley University will have the luxury of striking Tuesday night's game against Trinity Western University from the books. Like clearing off a hard drive. Like burning the game film. It does not exist. It does not count.

Good thing, because Trinity Western handed UVU a convincing 77-58 defeat in an exhibition game

"I thought Trinity Western came in and played with a tremendous amount of energy and emotion and they did a lot of things that really bothered our defense," said UVU coach Dick Hunsaker. "Do you find some things out about your kids? Sure you do. There's some things that I learned about our kids tonight."

Hunsaker's philosophy is to use an exhibition game just as that, a practice game.

"There's no game plan and no scheme going into this game and I run no plays," Hunsaker said. "So it was very hard on our kids to play offense and it's very hard on the defensive end because there's no preparation to play the game. From that standpoint you have to put the onus on me and how I approach exhibition games."

It was Trinity Western that put on an exhibition in 3-point shooting. The team from Canada can shoot, especially Jacob Doerksen, who lit up UVU for 28 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field. He also canned three 3-pointers.

The game gave UVU a chance to see what it needs to work on before the official season opener on Nov. 13 against North Dakota State in Orem.

For starters, perimeter defense. Trinity Western shot 57 percent in the second half and 53 percent from the 3-point line.

The Spartans started to get hot at the end of the half. Trinity's Tyrell Mara hit a 3-pointer to close out the first half that the game tied at 35 at intermission.

Trinity Western opened the second half by outscoring UVU 19-9 to take control of the game.

One of the bright spots was the play of point guard Kevin Woods, who is coming off an ACL injury. He led UVU with 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and passed out three assists.

Tyray Petty finished with 10 points and led UVU in rebounds with eight. Jourdain Scoubes and Justin Baker each had nine points for the Wolverines.
