SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State used an eight-run sixth inning to pull away from UVU and win 10-0, in seven innings on Friday at John Smith Field.
The Wolverines (14-22, 7-7 WAC) trailed 2-0 in heading into the sixth before the Hornets (24-14, 12-2) broke the game open. Mark Krueger had two hits to lead UVU while Kyle Moses had three hits for Sac State. David Del Grande had a two-run double and Will Soto hit a two-run home run as part of the big inning for the Hornets.
It’s the second straight shutout win for Sac State in the series. The series finale will be today.
MEN'S GOLF: At El Macero, Calif., the UVU men's golf team is in 11th place with a 311 after the opening round of the El Macero Classic. Junior Michael Dart led UVU with a 2-over 74, tied for 20th on the individual leaderboard.
Host UC Davis leads the event at 283. Other UVU scores were Brayden Eriksen 76, JT Timmons 80 and Preston Richards 81. Round 2 is today.
SOFTBALL: At Kansas City, the UVU softball team snapped a six-game skid with a 6-4 win in Game 1, but couldn't duplicate the feat in Game 2as it fell 5-1 to split a WAC doubleheader with Kansas City.
Debra Lovell and Amanda Robinson each drove in two runs between the two ballgames, with Robinson belting her team-high sixth home run in the second inning of the series opener. The shot was the fourth in the last five games for the senior catcher, who would go on to post a 3-for-3 day with two RBI and three runs scored to begin the series.
UVU is now 13-30 overall, 5-6 WAC.
