Springville head coach Scott Mitchell got it not once, but twice. Springville assistant coach Doug Bills got it. Even Springville trainer Lisa Walker was not immune to Springville's celebration.
Anyone on Springville's sideline was in danger of getting a Gatorade bath.
Winning a region title sure can be fun -- and awfully cold in Mitchell's case.
On Thursday night, Mitchell held up the Region 8 trophy, shivered and smiled after his Red Devils completed region play undefeated with an impressive 42-14 win over Salem Hills.
"It's kind of neat to see the players know that if you believe in something and you work hard at it that it can happen," Mitchell said. "We have a great bunch of kids and a great bunch of coaches and they've all kind of drunk the Kool-aid, so to speak, so I guess anything is possible."
Springville quarterback Steve Bate carved up Salem Hills' secondary by throwing two touchdown passes to Jordan Sumsion, while Marcus Case ran for two touchdowns as the Red Devils reeled off 42 straight points after falling behind 14-0.
"It certainly was a wake-up call for us. You're going to get their best shot," Mitchell said. "They've (Salem Hills) come a long ways in two years, so we expected them to come out and do a lot of different thing
Springville found itself in a hole early in the first quarter. Salem Hills took the opening kickoff down to the Springville 10 thanks to a Jason Anderson return that set up a 3-yard run from Kolapa Wolfgramm.
The Skyhawks then debuted a halfback pass play that turned into an easy touchdown. Quarterback Josh Adams threw a swing pass to Wolfgramm, who stopped and fired a pass down field to Josh Warr for a 65-yard touchdown strike that put Salem Hills a 14-0 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter.
But once Springville's efficient offense got rolling, Salem Hills couldn't stop it.
Mitch Paystrup got Springville on the board first with a 22-yard run with a minute left in the first quarter. A Case 21-yard touchdown run and another one from five yards out put Springville on top 21-14.
The killer came when quarterback Bate found Sumsion in the end zone from three yards out just before the half to give the Red Devils a 28-14 lead.
Springville wouldn't let Salem Hills think about a comeback because it took the Red Devils just over a minute to score in the third quarter to put the game out of reach on a Bate-to-Sumsion pass from 19 yards out.
"We got on them kind of quick, but they're deep and they're good," said Salem Hills coach Monte Morgan. "We couldn't establish a running game. We could get a play every now and then, but we couldn't get anything consistent."
Springville finished region play with a 5-0 record and will now open the playoffs at home next week. Salem Hills finished at 3-2 and has the region's third seed.
