After a lackadaisical first quarter, the Timpview Thunderbirds came awake offensively and defensively to rout Olympus 35-7 in the first round of the Class 4A state football playoffs Friday in Provo.

The T'Birds (8-2) started slowly and neither team scored in the first quarter.

"Guys (on my team) were late, which means we were not prepared and some were overlooking this team," said Timpview coach Louis Wong in explanation of the first-quarter drought. "That won't happen next week. If they show up late, they won't play.

"In the second quarter I chewed on them a little," Wong continued, "because the offense wasn't producing."

The offense began producing in the second quarter, in part thanks to the defense. Timpview scored three times, with quarterback Trevor Brown running in two scores (from 17 and 26 yards out) and Bryson McKenzie scoring on a 9-yard carry.

Brown's second score came after the Timpview defense recovered an Olympus fumble on the Titan 32, leaving the T'Bird offense with a short field.

Olympus also had a defensive highlight in the second quarter. The Titans' Sam Williams intercepted a pass from Brown in the end zone. But Olympus was unable to do anything with the ball and Timpview led 21-0 at the half.

Jeremiah Burr helped Timpview get the third quarter started off right, scoring on a 1-yard run with 3:08 left in the period. After Tyler Solorzano's PAT, Timpview led 28-0. Burr added another score in the fourth quarter before Olympus managed to finally find the end zone.

Defensive spotlights included nine quarterback sacks for the T'Birds, with Reuben Christianson getting credit for two. Each team had three turnovers -- the T'Birds intercepted the Titan QB twice (Chris Badger was credited with one as the fourth quarter started and Nick Clearwater also got one in the fourth) as well as recovering that second-quarter fumble. Timpview fumbled twice -- one led to the Titans' only score -- and Williams got that interception in the end zone.

One of the best plays of the night was called back, early in the fourth quarter, due to a holding penalty. Badger grabbed an interception and took off, scampering 40 yards to the Olympus 25. As he was going down in the grasp of Titan tacklers, Badger tossed the ball to lineman Tyson Tiatia, who carried it into the end zone. The crowd went wild until a flag was thrown. The play was called back on a holding penalty.

"We will prepare for (Spanish Fork) next week like we do for every opponent, we will attack their weaknesses," Wong said of the T'Birds' second-round game. "Our offense tried not to show too much this week and last week (against Provo) so we can save some for when we need it."

Timpview had 410 yards of total offense, while Olympus had 153. Brown was 12-for-19 and one interception for 174 yards passing. Josey Trammel had 23 yards on five carries. Even some JV players got in for a few plays as Jonathan Ghosoph had 23 yards and showed several good moves for a sophmore running back.
