After years of region titles and deep-but-not-deep-enough playoff runs, the Timpanogos girls soccer team finally has its state title.
In a game that was everything a state championship should be, Timpanogos' Gel Dickson hit McKenzie Adams in the final minute of the game for the goal that won the 4A state title as Timpanogos knocked off Bonneville 2-1 on Friday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Eight seniors, many of whom played varsity all four years at Timpanogos, will go down in glory as part of a team that won the first state soccer title in school history.
"They've been groomed for a moment like this," said Timpanogos coach Natalyn Lewis. "We focused on one game at a time and after every game I'd hold up my four fingers and tick one down. I'm really excited to go in that locker room right now and tick this baby down and tell them they're done."
With the game tied at 1-1 and each second ticking ever closer to overtime, Dickson shook a Brave defender and jetted down the right sideline. Just before the end line the senior forward cut a ball through the middle of Bonneville territory. Adams came streaking in at the perfect time, redirecting the cross into the back of the net with just 40 seconds remaining on the game clock.
"I knew it was going to be a goal as soon as Gel started running it down the field," Adams said. "It was the best feeling in the world finally finishing that off."
Just minutes before assisting the game-winner, Dickson came agonizingly close to ending it herself, heading a corner kick that bounced off the corner of the crossbar.
"It made me more pumped because I got so close," Dickson said of the header. "I didn't care who scored, I just wanted to win so bad."
The three-headed attack of Adams, Dickson and Marissa Nimmer combined for 57 goals during the season, leading the second-most potent offense in 4A.
But while Dickson and Nimmer had the higher stats and drew the defense, it was Adams, a junior, who came through against Bonneville, scoring both Timpanogos goals.
"If there was ever a day for somebody to show up huge, what a day to choose to show up huge," said Lewis of Adams. "With Dickson and Nimmer I think she's been a little overshadowed this season. She came out and showed out what she can do, and if she didn't do it than no one else did. She's the playmaker and played a phenomenal game."
Adams scored the game's first goal in the 23rd minute on a rocket from 20 yards away. Collecting the ball, Adams advanced through the Bonneville defense, and then struck a shot that slotted right in the upper left corner of the goal.
Just five minutes later, Bonneville looked to tie the game when Brave forward Jaiden Thornock went around Timpanogos goalkeeper Alexa Anderson on breakaway and took what looked to be an open-net shot. But T'Wolf defender Lexie Henrie came off the weak side and threw herself in front of the shot, deflecting the would-be goal away.
Henrie, nicknamed "Spaghetti Legs" by her coach, was one of a trio of defenders, including Kelsee Soelberg and Lauren Richardson, who manned up to a big and fast Bonneville front line.
"I told her after the game, 'I love your spaghetti legs because they got in there and mixed it up and saved a lot of goals for us tonight.' Between Lexie, Kelsee and Lauren how could you choose an MVP?"
Thornock did manage to score Bonneville's lone goal on a broken play in the 65th minute, but plays by the Timpanogos defense, including a quick-as-a-cat save by T'Wolf goalkeeper Anderson on a hard shot from just ten yards out gave the attacking squad the end opportunity for the win.
Lewis has led the T'Wolves as far as the state quarterfinals every season since 2004, but Timpanogos had never before played in the state final. Right from the start of this season, however, Lewis knew her team had what it took to finish the season on top.
"Before the season we said this time is going to be different; this time we're going all the way," Lewis said. "I'm so happy for them."
