In a Jekyll and Hyde-type offensive game, where the momentum was as shifty as the weather, the Timpanogos girls soccer team was victorious over Springville 2-1 Tuesday night in the 4A state semifinals at Juan Diego High School in Draper.

The victory earns the T'Wolves a berth in the 4A state championship game against Bonneville, to be played on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Two goals by junior Marissa Nimmer were the difference in the game, as Timpanogos was able to overcome a strong second-half effort from the Red Devils.

The first half was all Timpanogos. Ball control was dominated by the T'Wolves, which in turn led to eight shots on goal and the majority of the half spent on the offensive. Timpanogos put constant pressure on Vanessa Johnson and the rest of the Springville defense, which was without defensive stopper Booke Larsen, who sat out with a broken foot.

The T'Wolves have a reputation for being dangerous with corner kicks and they proved that in the first half.

About halfway through half No. 1, Nimmer set up for her team's first corner kick of the game, drilling it off of the far goal post, into a Red Devil defender and into the net, putting Timpanogos up 1-0.

That score stood going into halftime, as the Timberwolves never let up in the first half.

"Coach told us we needed to settle down," Nimmer said, when asked about what was talked about at halftime. "He said we were too excited and had too much energy and that we needed to concentrate on passing the ball to each other more."

That strategy came in handy right away for Timpanogos, as the trailing Devils came out firing in the second half.

The Red Devils started the second half with a sense of urgency, as though they knew the clock was not on their side.

About five minutes into the second half, that aggressive play paid dividends, as Springville evened the score at 1-1 behind a powerful goal by Lexi Eaton off of a breakaway.

The Devils had many opportunities in the second half to take the lead, but the Timpanogos defense locked down. Led by seniors Lauren Richardson, Kelsee Soelberg and Sierra Johnson and sophomore Lexie Henrie, the T-Wolves' defense was able to temper the up-tempo play of the Red Devil offense in the second half.

The game-changing play came with 11 minutes left in regulation.

The T'Wolves had been drastically limited offensively in the second half, but certainly took advantage of one big opportunity when Nimmer broke free from a crowd of defenders at the top of the goal box and blasted a shot into the back of the net, putting her Timberwolves up 2-1. That score gave Timpanogos the advantage it needed to earn the right to play in the state championship game.

"We played the ball forward well," Nimmer said. "Getting the ball up the field allowed us to go up early on."

When asked if an earlier meeting with Springville gave them an advantage in preparation, Nimmer said, "We knew they (Springville) were a good team, and we prepared for how quick they were."
