Mountain View was all business Thursday night as the Bruins came into Saratoga Springs to battle the Westlake Thunder in Region 7 action.

It took the Bruins only three games -- albeit hard-fought, back-and-forth games -- to dispatch of Westlake 25-14, 25-20, 25-21 and head into the state tournament with some momentum. With the Bruin victory, they also nabbed a share of the Region 7 title with Lehi, whom they split their season matchups with.

Each game had a high level of intensity but Mountain View set the tone early in Game 1. Jumping out to a 8-2 lead behind strong setting and even stronger hitting. Heather Glassford controlled the ball for the Bruins and set up star outside hitter Chelsey Schofield all night. Schofield got on top of the ball early and often, putting the Westlake defense on its heels and forcing the Thunder to try to set up their own offense off of hard digs from her spikes.

The Bruins took advantage of poor Thunder serving to take a 13-6 lead, a deficit that Westlake could not overcome despite a great start by hitter Elle Brainard, who had three kills in the game and 10 on the night.

Game 2 was much of the same, with the Bruins starting strong and the Thunder having to play catch-up.

An 11-3 Mountain View lead had the Bruins feeling pretty comfortable, but Westlake was not taking that lying down. The Thunder came rolling back, led by great serving by Mikayla Bond and powerful hitting by Brainard, staying within one point of Mountain View the rest of the way.

The Bruins had trouble with their hitting, but the net defense in the crucial second game was excellent. Glassford and Rachel Steele did their part for Mountain View, making the hitters for Westlake try to find openings that weren't there. That resulted in Mountain View points and a Bruin win.

"It was a grind-it-out type game for us," Mountain View coach Andrew Young said. "We weren't at the top of our game and never really got fully into our groove, but ended up pulling it out."

Game 3 was also a tug-o-war but Mountain View just had too many weapons, winning a back-and-forth game. Offensively, the Bruins' Schofield and Steele were too much to handle and defensively, Mountain View's net defense really made life hard on Westlake in each of the games.

Schofield led Mountain View with 18 kills, eight digs and five aces. Steele added seven kills of her own to go with her phenomenal defense and setter Glassford finished with 24 assists.
