The Crystal Ray takes on New Age approach

By Cathy Allred - North County Staff - | Jan 3, 2008

A store described as “an oasis of connection and soul vitality,” The Crystal Ray opened Dec. 11 in Pleasant Grove at 661 W. State Road.

Three sisters and a “silent partner” have opened the store, meeting and treatment center in hopes of becoming the networking hub for Utah County’s New Age holistic community.

“We’re going to have a central location for the New Age holistic community,” Holly Sue Hatfield said. “We want to make sure we make it reasonable for our people.”

Partner Christopher Allen and owners Crystal Rae Miller, Hatfield and Liberty Mason said they foresee their store as a haven for those Utahns who have a more open view of alternative holistic treatments and New Age lifestyles as complementing the dominant culture in Utah Valley.

Customers will find an ample supply of CDs, oils, incense and accessories, teas, cards, figurines and statuary, crystals, stones, jewelry and books.

“Lots of pretty sparkly things,” Mason said. “A lot of feel-good vibe things.”

The Crystal Ray features products from Deepak Chopra, Louise Hay, Gregg Braden, Doreen Virtue, Jonathan Goldman and Lisa Ross-Walker.

Not only a retail store for local and imported products, there is a large meeting room and three treatment rooms available. The treatment rooms are for rent and provide space for practitioners who would like to provide readings and treatments in a central location.

“People can come here and bring their own clients and rent the rooms,” Hatfield said. “They need to bring their own equipment.”

Possible uses for the rooms include acupressure, massage, holistic healing. Each room has a light dimming control, individual audio programing and a overhead speaker system. There is a shelf set up for candles and incense. One of the rooms has a massage bed for a variety of treatments.

“They can also come with nothing,” she said of potential clients. “The room is ready for them … Their success is our success.”

A waiting area in the back near the treatment rooms provides a quiet secluded lounge for clients. The conference or large meeting room is free of charge for workshops, training seminars or any kind of group learning experience such as yoga, and observances such as solstice celebrations.

The owners are seeking practitioners for the new store — lightworkers, holistic healers, body workers, naturopaths, energy workers, spiritual mentors, quantum touch healers, reiki practitioners, massage therapists, iridologists, accupressurists, psychic readers, yoga instructors, sound and color therapists, life coaches.

“Utah County is ready for it,” Mason said of their store. “It’s basic demographics.”

The decision to open a simple retail shop evolved into a combination conference and treatment center in addition to a consignment and retail store.

“Every simple road block turned out to be a blessing in disguise,” she said of the process to open The Crystal Ray. Roadblocks varied from finding a good location for the store to misconceptions of what their products and service represented.

“That this doesn’t coincide with the culture here and that it is a religion of its own, that it’s anti-religious, none of which is true,” Miller said were some of the misconceptions.

“It’s a connecting network without respect of persons,” Allen said. “We are all about supporting everybody in positiveness. Its purpose is to unite, uplift and heal.”

While the owners offer alternative healing energy medicine and conscious holistic lifestyle, they open their store to everyone.

“If (LDS) missionaries want to come and use our conference room, we welcome them,” Miller said.

They said anything that is a positive and spiritual will be represented and loved.

“We’ve been very kindly receive from the people in this area,” Hatfield said.

The three sisters, natives of Orem, complement one another with their strengths and interests.

Mason makes handmade soaps, “Squeaky Clean Soapworks.” Her business began as a hobby when she went to Barnes and Noble looking for a book on origami nearly eight years ago. Instead, she found a book on soap making.

“It took 2-3 years to perfect my recipes,” she said. Mason’s products, she does oils, balms and lotions as well, are made with 100 percent natural and organic ingredients. Her aloe oatmeal cranberry and ultimate detox bars are their more popular soap bars.

Miller makes energetically-balanced jewelry and Hatfield is spearheading the company’s DiviniTees T-shirt design and production.

They said they would like to see others sell their products on consignment or wholesale to them for retail products in the store.

Miller is the inspiration, the motivating force, behind The Crystal Ray. Named after her given name “Crystal Rae,” she wasn’t too sold on the idea for a retail store in the beginning.

“I was inspired,” she said. “It was literally, I don’t want to sound crazy, but a voice in my head.”

In what she could only described as a “niggling” in her brian, the idea persisted and would not go away.

“I kept saying ‘uh, no thank you,’ and it just wouldn’t go away,” Crystal, an active LDS member, said.
