There’s no question that Utah Valley is a big deal when it comes to business, and not just compared to other places in the state. Local businesses have been gaining national accolades for their innovation, ethics and even just the size of their workforce.
So what businesses in the area are providing the most jobs? We took a look at Department of Workforce Services data pulled from their Major Employers report, which was updated with the most recent numbers from the fall of 2018.
These 20 employers were ranked as having the most employees in Utah County.
Brigham Young University
Listed under the industry of Colleges, Universities and Professional Schools, the top employer in Utah County according to the Department of Workforce Services is Brigham Young University based in Provo. Data shows that the university employs between 15,000 and 19,999 employees.
Alpine School District
Also in the education industry, this time elementary and secondary education, is the Alpine School District, coming in at second for the most employees. The Department of Workforce Services says that the district employs between 7,000 and 9,999 employees.
Utah Valley University
Formerly Utah Valley State College, Utah Valley University in Orem made No. 3 on the list of biggest employers, probably due in part to its large and diverse student population. The university is in the Colleges Universities and Professional Schools industry and employs between 5,000 and 6,999 people.
Utah Valley Hospital
Formerly known as Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Utah Valley Hospital comes in at fourth in the county for its number of employees. Listed under General Medicine and Surgical Hospitals industry, Utah Valley Hospital in Provo is providing employment for 5,000-6,999 individuals.
A home security and automation company based in Provo, Vivint has been steadily growing the last few years, with employee numbers to represent that growth. It is listed in the Building Equipment Contractors industry, and boasts a total of 3,000-3,999 employees.
Nebo School District
Yet another employer in the education field, the Nebo School District takes the sixth spot on the list of top employers. The district, listed under the Elementary and Secondary Schools industry, employs between 3,000 and 3,999 employees, according to the Department of Workforce Services.
There are 11 Walmart Superstore and Neighborhood Markets in Utah County and the retail giant is the seventh-largest employer in the county. According to the Utah Department of Workforce Services, Walmart employs between 2,000 and 2,999 people.
The State of Utah
Listed under the industry of Justice, Public Order and Safety Activities, the State of Utah employs between 2,000 and 2,999 employees in Utah County, according to the Department of Workforce Services.
RBD Acquisition based out of Provo is listed in the industry "Services to Buildings and Dwellings." The investment company employs between 2,000 and 2,999 people, according to the Department of Workforce Services.
Young Living Essential Oils
The business of essential oils is obviously popular. Young Living Essential Oils, an essential oil company listed in the industry of "DirectSelling Establishments," makes the list at No. 10. They employ between 2,000 and 2,999 employees.
Vivint Solar, which provides residential solar systems, employs between 1,000 and 1,999 people, according to the Department of Workforce Services.
Provo School District
The county's third elementary and secondary school district, the Provo City School District, comes in at No. 12 on the list of largest employers. The district employs between 1,000 and 1,999 people.
Orem-based Nexeo makes their business by taking care of everyone else’s business, in the most literal way. An HR Solutions provider, Nexeo is listed under the categories of "Employment Services." They employ between 1,000 and 1,999 people, according to the Department of Workforce Services.
Essential oils, anyone? DoTerra has quite the reputation in the area for its unique product line, listed in the report only as Retail Trade. The Pleasant Grove-based company is reported as having 1,000-1,999 current employees.
IM Flash Technologies
IM Flash, the joint venture of Intel and Micron that was formed in 2006, boasts to have the most “technologically advanced flash memory in the world.” And they’re located right here in Lehi. To support their products, the company is reported in the Manufacturing category as having 1,000-1,999 employees.
Entrata offers property management software and is listed in the industry of "Data Processing and Hosting" by the Department of Workforce Services. The company, headquartered in Lehi, employs between 1,000 and 1,999 people.
Provo is the largest city in Utah County and also has the largest employment of any city in the county. The city employs between 1,000 and 1,999 people.
Smith's Food and Drug
If you shop at Smith's, know that you are contributing to one of the largest employing grocery stores in the county. With seven Utah County locations, Smith's employs between 1,000 and 1,999 people.
Adobe Systems, Inc.
Listed under Information, Lehi-based Adobe actually covers the spectrum of digital products from video to design, text to stock photo services. With so many offerings, it’s no wonder the company is reported as having 1,000-1,999 employees.
Ranked at No. 20 on our list of top employers, Sundance Resort -- which is open year-round with activities beyond skiing -- employs between 1,000 and 1,999 employees.
