Movies Hot Ticket: Singin’ with the Sharks

By Staff | May 2, 2013

Whose side are you on? The Salt Lake Film Society (saltlakefilmsociety.org) doesn’t want there to be any fence-sitters.

The ongoing “Sing With” series of screenings at the Tower Theatre in Salt Lake City invites viewers to pick a side and sing along during its upcoming screening of “West Side Story.” The 1961 film follows the blueprint of the beloved Broadway show, which itself is a musical reworking of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

In fair, er, Manhattan, where we lay our scene, there are two, um, gangs, both alike in dignity, or at least in wanting to be sure that you didn’t disrespect them. When Tony from the Jets falls in love with Maria, whose brother runs the Sharks, well, that’s just not cool. Uh-oh. Did “Romeo and Juliet” have a happy ending?

Tickets to the sing-along, to be held May 11 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Tower, are $15.
