Film Hot Ticket: ‘Nacho Libre’ comes to Thanksgiving Point

By Staff | Jul 6, 2017

Jared Hess doesn’t owe you anything. He gave you “Nacho Libre,” and that’s more than enough.

The 2006 film comes to Thanksgiving Point on Friday night, as part of its Outdoor Movie Series. Directed by Brigham Young University grad and “Napoleon Dynamite” creator Jared Hess, “Nacho Libre” was the perfect follow up to that surprise hit. With a considerably bigger budget, the support of a major movie studio and the comedic talents of leading man Jack Black, Hess made something really special with “Nacho Libre.” It’s just as quirky as “Napoleon Dynamite,” but with a superior story, acting, production design and cinematography.

Hess has been hit-and-miss (mostly miss) in the years since “Nacho Libre.” His 2009 film “Gentleman Broncos” was a mess of a movie, and 2015’s “Don Verdean” didn’t live up to its considerable potential. I will, however, go to bat for last year’s “Masterminds,” a ridiculous, uproarious, thoroughly engaging comedy that floundered at the box office. It seems like “Nacho Libre” was the story Hess was born to tell. And he told it quite well, indeed.

Friday’s film will be shown at Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point, starting at dusk. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for children (ages 3-12) and seniors, available at thanksgivingpoint.org. Thanksgiving Point is located at 3003 N. Thanksgiving Way in Lehi.
