This is one of our favorite times of the year to eat out, and not just because we're always too busy to cook anything between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Many local restaurants add seasonal items to their menus, things you can get only during the holidays. Ice cream parlors, bakeries and even lunch and dinner stops add flavors and goodies that come around just once a year. And you can't walk into a mall without smelling those candied almonds.
Here are a few local shops offering seasonal menu items. Check with your favorite eateries to see what seasonal items they have.
Emmett's & Ethel's
At Emmett's & Ethel's, a happy marriage of burger joint and ice cream shop, you might expect the Egg Nog, Pumpkin and Candy Cane shakes. The shakes cost $3.24-$4.24. But here you'll also find a few soups, added only for the cold season, and some Navajo Tacos, also around for a limited time. Not what we might have thought of for the holidays, but it sounds good. Soups cost $3 and the Navajo Tacos are $5.

Coffee Pod offers a variety of coffees and warm drinks year round. But these days you can get a Pumpkin Spice steamer (steamed milk with flavoring) or an Egg Nog steamer. Also, there are several flavors of hot chocolate. Both hot chocolates and steamers come in three sizes, from 12 to 20 ounces. Steamers cost $2-$3, hot chocolate is $2.50-$3.

Kneaders Bakery & Cafe
At any other time of the year, you might be satisfied with Kneaders's selection of sandwiches, breads and cookies. But nowadays you shouldn't leave without getting a slice of pie. They're $2.39 per slice, and selection depends on what was baked that morning. But with any luck you'll find one of their Pumpkin, Pecan, Grated Apple or Key Lime pies. Whole pies and gift baskets can also be ordered for pick-up. Pies cost $11-$12.
