It was a classic family activity in locations around Utah County -- to pack the car full and head to the local drive-in movie theater.
Unfortunately, there are no more permanent drive-ins still open in Utah County, but Water Gardens Theater in Pleasant Grove recently opened an impromptu drive-in theater to adapt to coronavirus social distancing protocols.
Here are five drive-in theaters in Utah County that we can only remember now.
Art City Drive-In
The Art City Drive-In theater opened in 1951, and was a staple of entertainment in Springville until it was demolished in 2002.
Pioneer Twin Drive-In
The Pioneer Twin Drive-In movie theater was open for 54 years in Provo. It opened in 1947 and closed in the summer of 2001 after owners Marv and Jeanie Cox sold the land. The land was then built into retail and residential space.
The Timp Drive-In opened in 1953 and was demolished in June 1993. It was located at 150 N. State St. in Orem.
The Geneva Drive-In, located at 1360 State St. in Orem opened on July 4, 1948. The first film shown was "California" starring Ray Milland.
It later closed in the 1970s.
The Starlite Drive-In opened in 1950 at 221 S. 500 East in American Fork.
Starlite Drive-In advertised many special giveaways and promotions over the years including Ford Night where the first 25 Ford cars received free entrance, free orchids for mothers near Mother's Day and a $1000 wedding giveaway for a couple to be married at the theater.
The theater closed in 1975 and was later demolished.
