BRIGHAM CITY — In a defensive struggle, Springville recovered a Box Elder fumble at the Box Elder 12-yard line with 1:46 left to move on and end the Bees’ season with a 17-13 victory in the first round of the 5A playoffs Friday.

Payton Murphy tossed two touchdown passes for Springville (6-5): a 5-yarder to Clayton Johnson with 8:01 left in the second quarter to tie the game 7-7 and an 80-yard pitch-and-catch to Trae Hillstead with 5:40 left in the third quarter to give the Red Devils the lead for good, 14-10.

Brodie Taylor added a 25-yard field goal to cap the scoring with 8:54 left in the game.

Parker Buchanan hit Nate Wheatley for a 43-yard touchdown with 3:16 left in the first quarter to open the scoring, putting Box Elder (7-4) ahead 7-0.

Keaton Lamb hit a 38-yard field goal to give the Bees a 10-7 lead with 5:57 left in the third quarter. Lamb stroked a 25-yarder with 10:33 left in the game to pull Box Elder to within 14-13.
