Saturday is shaping up to be a very competitive finish at the Class 5A girls tennis championships.
Four-time defending state champion Olympus and Timpview are tied with eight points each after the first day of competition on Thursday. Both teams have semifinalists in four of the five brackets. Highland and Woods Cross are tied for third with six points and Alta, Corner Canyon and Wasatch all scored five points.
The first two rounds were moved from Liberty Park to the Salt Lake Tennis Center due to rain. Saturdays finals will be at the Eccles Tennis Center at the University of Utah.
Springville senior Emma Templeton, the No. 1 seed from Region 8, defeated Alessandra Harris of Bountiful 6-0, 6-1 and Dylan Lolofie of Highland 6-2, 7-5 to reach the 1st Singles semifinals. She will take on Emmi Moore of East.
Region 7 No. 1 Gwen Bryson, a junior from Timpview, defeated Rylie Wiscombe of Maple Mountain 6-1, 6-1 and Annecy Hansen of Farmington 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. She will play Sophie Hastings of Highland.
Timpview sophomore Avery Pope rolled through her competition in 3rd Singles, beating Ashlyn Anderson of Box Elder 6-0, 6-0 and Isapeli Huhane of Highland 6-1, 6-0 to move on the semifinals. She will play Brighton’s Brynley Olsen in the semifinals.
Timpview’s Lucy Collins and Jamie Faux won twice and will play Laura Baker and Lexi Farnes of Woods Cross in one of the 1st Doubles semifinals. Collins and Faux defeated Jane Reese and Cambry Robins of Olympus 6-1, 6-1 and Springville’s Brookelynn Galbraith and AnnaBeth Templeman 6-1, 4-6, 7-2 (2) to advance.
Anna Fellers and Maddie Austin of Timpview will meet Emma Berg and Rebecca McGregor of Wasatch in one of the 2nd Doubles semifinals. Fellers and Austin beat Savannah Cochran and Olivia Smith of Springville 6-2, 6-2 and Highland’s Abby Bradford and Kate Creamer 6-1, 6-3.
