January is the perfect time to get organized

By Jennifer Durrant special To The Daily Herald - | Jan 15, 2019

I have officially become obsessed with organizing my home. While I typically do get on a purging kick every January (Have to make room for the new stuff from Christmas, right?), this year I’m especially obsessed thanks to Netflix’s newest binge-worthy sensation, “Tidying Up.” Japanese organization expert Marie Kondo is teaching me and millions of others how to declutter using the KonMari method.

After a folding frenzy last week and a purge of tons of clothes and shoes, my closet is slowly being tamed. Now, however, it’s time to tackle my kitchen, bathroom and office. A little intimidating (or a lot), I’ve found a lot of help thanks to the many tips, tricks and tools on Pinterest.

Here are a few of my favorite guidelines. For more, visit our Ultimate Organizing board on Pinterest.

Kitchen

Just before sitting down to write this column, I was prepping dinner and rummaging through my overflowing kitchen drawers trying to find my cheese slicer. After digging through three drawers, I finally found the elusive tool, but it was clear that I have both too many kitchen tools (I love kitchen gadgets), and they are seriously unorganized.

Time for the KonMari method! Before I organize those crazy drawers and cupboards, it’s time to go through each and every spot in the kitchen, pull out each tool or container and thoughtfully decided if each item brings me joy. If not, as Kondo advises, I will say “thank you” and add it to my donation pile. Then, I plan on buying boxes and containers to help keep everything easy to find.

Bathroom

Just like in my kitchen, my bathroom cupboards and linen closet are overflowing with makeup, skin and haircare products. While I blame my beloved vanity subscription boxes for loading me up with all those products, I do know that I need to declutter my limited bathroom space. Time to eliminate the waste and make that bathroom more of an oasis.

Thankfully my mom taught me from a young age how to fold towels in thirds — which is the KonMari way. So, with my towels already folded beautifully, it’s now time to take that folding style to all my washcloths and then it’s time to move on to finding the perfect containers and bins to organize all those cosmetics. Maybe if my bathroom is better organized, I’ll have more good hair days!

Office

If there’s one area in my home where I need the most help decluttering, it’s the office and piles of paper. Piles of receipts, bills, sticky notes, junk mail and books join the jars and drawers filled with pens, markers, scissors, staplers and even charging cables have taken over my small home office. While I try to keep my desk somewhat organized, the piles on the floor, in my bookcase and on other countertops is just overwhelming.

My books (did I mention I used to work for a book publisher?) are so overwhelming. Time to ask myself the following questions about each book: Do I love this book? Will I read it again? Will I refer to it often? Do I have multiple copies? Do I have the ebook or audiobook? Is the information outdated? Am I still interested in the topic? If I decide the books aren’t a good fit for me anymore, time to donate!
