Dona Grace Nelson Kitchen

1915 ~ 2013

Dona Grace Nelson Kitchen, beloved mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, left this life on Sunday, December 30, 2012 aged 97 years. A native of Spanish Fork, Dona was born April 28, 1915 the second daughter of Leah V. Holt and Henry Nelson. A product of local schools, Dona graduated Spanish Fork High School in 1933 and went on to earn her degree at BYU.

In 1938, Dona married Merrill Kitchen of Orem in the Salt Lake Temple. The Kitchens made their home on the family farm in Orem where they labored and raised their family. She was always a faithful member of the LDS Church and accepted many callings over the years. As a dedicated professional, Dona loved teaching elementary school children. She taught for both the Provo and Alpine School Districts during her long career.

Upon retirement, Dona purchased her mother's house and returned to her roots in Spanish Fork. Home again, she took an active part in the First Ward, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Spanish Fork Women's Club. She was an avid reader, often completing two books per week. She enjoyed sewing and created beautiful quilts, which she gifted to each of her progeny.

She is survived by four children: Joyce Kitchen (Tom) Robins, Lake Forest, CA; Don Merrill (Jan) Kitchen, Lake Arrowhead, CA; Elaine Kitchen (Chris) Johnson, Kent, WA; Reed Lynn (Jolene) Kitchen, Simi Valley, CA. Her nieces Patty (Richard) Mahlan, Kay (Steve) Linebach, and Beth (Paul) Hedengren and a nephew, Richard (Judy)Finch. Twenty grandchildren, and many great and great-great grandchildren lovingly refer to her as "Grandma K". Her sister Leah Finch preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Spanish Fork 1st Ward Chapel, 310 East Center Street, Spanish Fork. Family and friends may call Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Walker Funeral Home of Spanish Fork, 187 South Main Street, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and prior to the services on Saturday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
