Mary Ann Sullivan Nyman returned home to Heavenly Father and her beloved husband, Monte S. Nyman, on December 13, 2016. She was surrounded by her eight children who cared for her during her battle against cancer.
Mary Ann, daughter of Gordon B. and Blanche Beckstrom Sullivan, was raised in St. George, UT. She was the fifth of nine children. She graduated from Dixie Jr. College in secretarial science and Utah State University with a degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics in Caliente, Nevada. Mary Ann was one of the first LDS sister missionaries to serve a two-year mission in Apia, Upolu, Samoa Mission from 1953-1955. She was the traveling secretary for Elder LeGrand Richards during her mission. After her mission she received her elementary teaching certificate which she later used to teach in Grace, Idaho. Before getting married, Mary Ann became an airline stewardess for United Airlines. She graduated first in her class and chose Salt Lake City to be her home base so she could be close to Monte during their courting.
She married the love of her life and the center of her world, Monte Stephen Nyman, on August 16, 1956 in the St. George Temple. They reared their two sons and six daughters in Logan and Provo, Utah. She traveled around the world with her husband and children, living for an extended period of time in Israel and Hawaii.
Mary Ann was a simple woman who centered her whole life around her family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was an avid reader and eloquent writer. She loved making denim quilts for all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She's known for brightening the lives of neighbors by delivering hundreds of German chocolate cakes.
She was full of charity, kindness, and love. She had a beautiful soul. Her Christ like qualities and selflessness will be remembered and treasured by all who’ve known her.
She is survived by her eight children: Monte Scott (Becky Heaps), Lori (Marty Olson), Dessie Ann (Todd Mitchell), June (Kevin Owen), Mary Jo (Darren Smith), Virgil Steven, Lorna Jean (Steve Miller), Carol Angela (Skip McWhorter).
