We return to school with gladness because we did summer right.
I just returned from my last two-hour bike ride for the summer. It flew by so fast! The summer that is.
In May, I bought a bike rack for my car so I could go on bike rides with my Dad during the summer.
We put that bike rack to good use for sure. We used it to take our bikes to the repair shop several times during the month of June. We used it to try out new trails during the month of July. And we retired it recently because we found a very pleasant bike trail that we can pick up close to our homes.
It’s been a good thing, taking long bike rides a few times a week all summer long. It helped me believe I was truly having a summer similar to the summers I experienced as a young girl. Back in the good old days, summer was for riding bikes and roller skates and reading lots of books and sewing doll clothes and playing with friends.
This past summer I rode bikes, skipped the roller blades, read lots of books, knitted baby outfits and played with grandkids. It was the best!
This week I went back to school. I overheard some young moms saying they can hardly wait for school to start. In a way, school will be a good thing for moms, and kids and teachers too.
There is something wonderful about the crisp cool air of fall and the structure of highly scheduled days and the whir of young minds learning new things; but I always love the long hot days of summer. Summer is the time of building and enjoying the relationships that matter; riding bikes with friends, playing games with relatives, going on road trips with family members.
Thank you, summer of 2017. You’ve been the best!
