Eaglecrest Elementary boundaries unlikely to change after community response about plan

By Braley Dodson daily Herald - | Jan 10, 2018

The neighborhoods near Eaglecrest Elementary School in Lehi are likely to continue sending their children to the same school.

The Eaglecrest Elementary School community voiced support for keeping the school’s boundaries as is Tuesday evening to the Alpine School District Board of Education.

The boundaries of Eaglecrest, Fox Hollow and Traverse elementary schools were expected to change as a new elementary school is added to north Lehi. The board voiced support in keeping the Eaglecrest Elementary School boundaries as they are, and the boundaries for Fox Hollow Elementary School may remain unchanged as well.

A vote on the boundaries will happen Jan. 23. The changes would take effect in the fall.

John Patten, the assistant superintendent in the school district for educational services and K-12, said the district received about 1,200 messages about the proposed changes, half of which came from the Eaglecrest Elementary School community.

Patten said if both Eaglecrest and Fox Hollow elementary schools were to keep their current boundaries, the new school would open with 450 students. Patten said a dual-language enrollment program could boost enrollment at the school, which is expected to see growth.

“That would automatically bring in kids out of area, for sure,” Patten said.

Multiple people addressed the board Tuesday in support of keeping Eaglecrest Elementary School’s boundaries as they are. The community told the board they didn’t want children attending a school that is farther away, that they wanted everyone in a neighborhood to be within the same school’s boundary and stated they were willing to stay at their current school despite crowding.

Patrea Marolf urged the board to keep the boundary as it is so parents don’t have to worry about how their children getting to school while crossing major intersections.

“It does put stress on the working mothers in our area specifically, there are quite a few of us, in making sure our children get to school safely,” she said.

Parents had previously met with school district officials to go over boundary proposals at an open house and addressed the board about the decision in December.

With the boundary likely staying the same, Eaglecrest Elementary School will no longer be automatically accepting out-of-area requests.

The district is also looking to adjust the boundaries for Vineyard Elementary School and to create boundaries for a new high school in Eagle Mountain.
