Hardy: The desperate need for school nurses

Most elementary schools in Utah do not have a full-time nurse. There are hundreds of kids at every school who may need help right away if they have a bad allergy, health problems, or even just scraping a knee to getting a deep cut. All schools need to have a nurse in worst-case injuries.

In school one time, I cut the back of my head, and if the nurse had not been there at the time, it could have been really bad. I was lucky to hit it when the nurse was in. After a few days, I went back to school, but if the staples had given way to the skin, and there was no school nurse, I do not think that anyone else would know how to treat it.

Most times, when someone gets a scrape, the people at the office just hand them a band-aid and expect them to know how to put it on. If they didn’t know how to put it on and they did not know how to do it, and the nurse was not in, the kid would have to leave it open until someone came by and helped them do it. Even though it might make us raise taxes, it will be good to make sure that our kids would be helped if hurt.
