Happy New Year! There are certain times that there seems to be a lull and nothing is really going on. The time right after Christmas and then New Year is that time. People stop making plans during December because the focus is the holidays, and then it takes a little time to get restarted after the New Year. The one exception to that rule, however, would be the Utah Parent Center. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, they always have classes and events on their calendar, and since all of their workshops are still virtual, there is easy access.

There are two workshops still this month that I wanted to share because the content is very timely. The first is “Strategies for Reducing Stress in Times of Crisis.” This course is set for Jan. 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The description reads, “Our ability to help our children is hindered during times of crisis. Our children can feel unsafe and insecure due to our constant stress levels. In this workshop we will offer mindfulness strategies to help you regulate your emotions and help your children also reduce their feelings of stress.”

The second workshop that sounded interesting is called “Executive Functioning.” This course is set for Jan. 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The description reads, “Does your child have a difficult time paying attention or following directions? Are they easily overwhelmed? Do they have a habit of frequently losing things, or managing their time? These struggles can be very challenging, and can impact many aspects of life! During this free, online workshop we will learn about executive functioning.”

There is also Disability Advocacy Day at the Capital on Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. With all of the things that are going on today affecting services for our population, there has never been a more important time for all of us to speak up. Later that day is the Annual Legislative Reception at the Capital Rotunda from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Registration for both of these events and Utah Parent Center training can be found at http://utahparentcenter.org.
