The Daily Herald Student of the Week is Hazel Wheeler, a fifth grade student at Orem Elementary School in the Alpine School District. Hazel’s fellow students are in for a treat this year. At the beginning of the year, Hazel had a great idea about creating a weekly newsletter for her class. She is someone who likes to include as many people as she can, and so far under her direction, her team of fellow classmates just published the first “Purple Panda Paper.”
To introduce the newsletter to her class, she created a “jump start” video which she shared. Her classmates learned that this paper includes spotlights on fellow classmates, an advice column, current class polls, soccer team opportunities and important dates to remember.
According to Hazel’s teacher, Mrs. Teresa Whitehead, “Hazel always goes above and beyond what is expected. She is a hard worker and a great example to our class. She wants everyone to be a part of the team.”
She not only has a passion for school, she also loves hiking, snow skiing, swimming, baking and dancing. Hazel also likes being outside playing with her friends.
When asked about her future post-elementary school plans, Hazel has a lot of ideas. She wants to attend BYU and possibly study dance and culinary arts. She is currently practicing both — dancing with BYU Young DanceMakers and creating fancy cakes (she currently made one for her school’s carnival).
Hazel is the kind of friend everyone loves to have. She is considerate, polite and wants to include everyone. When asked about herself, she is humble and states, “I am still practicing to be better.”
When she is not busy with school and her hobbies, she enjoys spending time with her family and practicing paper crafts.
