Sen. David P. Hinkins, right, talks with Rep. Francis D. Gibson, Majority Leader, as part of a joint session during the first day of the legislative session held at the Utah State Capitol on Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, in Salt Lake City.

On the heels of Tuesday’s resignation of Utah House Majority Leader Francis D. Gibson, R-Mapleton, the Utah County Republican Party is taking a fast track to replace him.

The Utah County GOP executive committee met Wednesday and unanimously decided to conduct a speedy election to ensure the people of District 65 and Utah County are represented at November’s Legislative special session, according to Skyler Beltran, chairman of the Utah County Republican Party.

The following timeline will be followed:

  • Candidate filing: Now through 5 p.m. Monday.
  • Zoom event: Wednesday.
  • In-Person event: Thursday, Nov. 4.
  • Election: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. The replacement will be named at the conclusion of the previously scheduled County Central Committee meeting.

“Lastly, we would like to thank Representative Gibson for his many years of service to the Party and the community. We wish him well in the future,” Beltran said in a news release.
