Utah Valley University announced Tuesday that Karen Acerson and Steven Lund will receive honorary doctorate degrees at its 2022 commencement ceremony.

Acerson, a business and community leader, will receive an honorary doctorate in humane letters, and Lund, who serves as executive chairman of the board of directors at Nu Skin Enterprises, will receive an honorary doctorate in business.

“Karen Acerson and Steve Lund are exemplary individuals who have sacrificed much to serve Utah Valley University and its students,” Astrid S. Tuminez, president of UVU, said in a press release. “Both served on UVU’s Board of Trustees and have personally donated their time, energy, and resources to strengthen UVU and help our students succeed. They are examples of grit, hard work, success, and ethical living that we want our students to emulate. We are proud to honor them.”

Acerson worked at WordPerfect as the director of customer support and, while there, she helped rewrite the company’s user manual. Acerson has authored five books with “WordPerfect: The Complete Reference,” ultimately becoming a New York Times bestseller.

Acerson has been involved with education at both the high school and secondary levels. She has been a young women’s 4-H leader and PTA president at Pleasant Grove High School, and served on the UVU Board of Trustees for 11 total years, as well as the Mountainland Technical College Board of Trustees for eight years.

Acerson played a part in organizing the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival and has served as the festival’s president and executive director. Currently, she serves as a board member at Brades’ Place, a nonprofit organization that specializes in providing at-home care to children with lifelong health challenges.

In addition to working as the executive chairman of the board at Nu Skin, Lund has served as the young mens general president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since April 2020. Lund has also worked as an attorney and was regent of the Utah System of Higher Education.

Lund co-founded Nu Skin Enterprises in 1984 and has served in various roles at the company including as president, CEO and executive director of the company’s Nourish the Children initiative, which applies business principles in an attempt to solve children’s world hunger.

Lund has also served on the board of directors for the U.S. Direct Selling Association, as well as the board of advisors for the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.

UVU’s 2022 commencement ceremony will take place on May 6 at the UCCU Center on the UVU Orem Campus.
