Although winter won’t officially begin until Dec. 21, Utah residents will need to prepare for winter weather early this year.

The Salt Lake City office of the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Monday around all Utah mountains. The warning will be in effect for the central and southern parts of the Wasatch Front from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. Thursday, with the heaviest snowfall expected Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.

The NWS warned that total snow accumulations of 1-2 feet are expected, with locally higher amounts of up to 3 feet in some higher-terrain locations. This storm was classified as a moderate weather risk, meaning that the significant mountain snow accumulations will impact travel.

According to the NWS, those traveling during this time should expect winter driving conditions with potentially low visibility at times.

The organization is recommending that drivers check road conditions before leaving home by calling 511, prepare for traction restrictions on mountain routes and carry a well-equipped winter survival kit in case of emergency.

Rocky Mountain Power issued a statement on Sunday informing customers that this storm may lead to power outages throughout its service area.

“Rocky Mountain Power is monitoring a storm system moving into the service territory that could produce a prolonged period of strong winds and moderate to potentially heavy precipitation starting early Monday morning, November 7th through Wednesday, November 9th, 2022,” read the statement. “The storm system could cause weather-related outages.”

The company also urged customers to prepare to be without essential public services for at least 72 hours and follow recommendations from local and state emergency management officials. Rocky Mountain Power also issued the following warning: “As a reminder, treat all downed wires as live and dangerous. Customers should avoid both downed trees and powerlines as well as keeping pets far away from those areas.”

In a post on Rocky Mountain Power’s Facebook page Sunday, the company offered the following tips to help customers prepare for the incoming storm:

  • Assemble or restock your emergency kit.
  • Update your contact info with the company so it can reach you.
  • Sign up for our text, email or phone alerts during an outage.
  • Call 877-508-5088, use the Rocky Mountain Power app or text 759677 to receive updates during the restoration process.
