A proclamation was signed by Mayor Mark Johnson marking Constitution Week at the Lehi City Council meeting on Tuesday along with a presentation on the document.

According to the proclamation, Constitution Week is meant to inspire residents to “reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties.”

Constitution Week was first started by the Daughters of the American Revolution, a nonprofit women’s service organization that has existed since 1890, is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and bettering education for children.

In 1955, the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set aside a week annually to recognize the Constitution, inspiring Public Law 915, which was signed into law the next year.

It has become a tradition for Lehi to follow suit with Public Law 915, which guarantees the issuing of a yearly proclamation by the President of the United States marking Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week.

At the meeting, Katie Madsen, Lehi resident and Regent of the Wasatch Range Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, gave a brief history of the Constitution, which was adopted in July 1776 and signed on Sept. 17, 1787, by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.

“It was ratified in 1788, and has been in operation since 1789. This makes our Constitution the world’s longest surviving written charter of government,” Madsen said. “Since 1789 nearly 800 constitutions for other countries have been written and adopted using the principles of ensuring the rights of individuals and dividing the powers of government into separate bodies.”
