Debates featuring Utah congressional candidates kick off starting Thursday

OGDEN — Election season is getting into high gear and several debates — sponsored by the Utah Debate Commission — are in the works to give voters a chance to size up the hopefuls.

The debates kick off on Thursday. Here’s a look at what’s coming up:

U.S. House: The commission is hosting a meeting between the 3rd District U.S. House hopefuls, incumbent John Curtis, a GOPer, and Democrat Glenn Wright next Thursday starting at 6 p.m. on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo.

The 1st District U.S. House hopefuls, Republican incumbent Blake Moore and Democratic challenger Rick Jones, meet in a debate at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 on the Weber State campus in Ogden.

The 4th District U.S. House candidates, GOP incumbent Burgess Owens, Democrat Darlene McDonald and January Walker of the United Utah Party, meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City.

The 2nd District U.S. House candidates, GOP incumbent Chris Stewart, Democrat Nick Mitchell and Cassie Easley of the Constitution Party, meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 on the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City.

U.S. Senate: The commission is hosting a debate between the two main U.S. Senate hopefuls, GOP incumbent Mike Lee and independent challenger Evan McMullin, at 6 p.m. Oct. 17 at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Mail-in ballots will be sent out starting around Oct. 18 and Election Day is Nov. 8.
