Payson Junior High student in custody after firearm allegedly found in their possession
A student was taken into custody Monday morning for allegedly having a firearm in their possession inside of Payson Junior High School.
The Nebo School District says Payson Junior High administration, in cooperation with local law enforcement, worked to address the incident swiftly.
“Students reported that another student was in possession of a firearm on school grounds. The School Resource Officer and administration responded immediately, locating the student and securing the firearm. The student was taken into custody,” the district said in a statement.
The school was not placed into lockdown as school resource officers were able to locate the student and the firearm within minutes after learning the weapon was on campus, officials told Fox 13.
The district said it understands how these types of incidents can be concerning but wanted parents and community members to have a peace of mind that students or staff reportedly are not in further danger.
“We want to assure our school community that there is no ongoing threat to student or staff safety. This incident was not related to any threat made against the school,” district spokesperson Seth Sorensen told the Daily Herald in an email.
Because the unidentified student is a minor, their identity as well as specific disciplinary actions against them were not released, nor was it divulged what type of weapon was involved. It also is the Daily Herald’s policy not to name minors accused of crimes, unless they are tried as an adult in court.
Principal Kevin Mecham praised the people who alerted authorities and said the school appreciates the patience and understanding of the community.
“A big thank you to our students for ‘seeing something and saying something,'” Mecham said in a statement on social media.
According to Sorensen, local law enforcement is conducting an investigation into the matter.
