A man died on Monday after he was shot by a homeowner in Orem, police reported.

Orem police officers arrived at a house near 400 N. 800 West on reports of a shooting Monday morning, said Lt. Craig Martinez with the Orem Police Department.

Around 7 a.m., the homeowner heard someone inside a garage that is unattached from his house.

The homeowner went inside his house, grabbed a small caliber handgun and confronted the man in the garage, Martinez said.

A scuffle occurred in which the homeowner shot the man in the garage multiple times in the abdomen.

First responders administered CPR before the man, a 49-year-old Hispanic Orem resident, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The man died from his injuries later Monday at the hospital. Officials have not released his name pending notification of his family.

No charges have been filed yet, Martinez said.

Police closed the road near the residence on 800 West for the ongoing investigation.
