An Orem residence is a total loss after a fire claimed the structure early Friday morning.

According to Battalion Chief Ryan Peterson with the Orem Fire Department, firefighters arrived at the home located at 905 W. 450 North at about 2:30 a.m. When they arrived, heavy smoke and flames were already showing.

A 37-year-old woman was in the basement when they arrived. Firefighters were able to rescue her, but she was transported to the hospital via an ambulance in critical condition.

Two other occupants of the home were treated on scene for smoke inhalation. The fourth occupant did not need treatment.

Peterson said 13 Yorkshire terriers, including a young litter of puppies, were killed in the fire.

Crews from Provo and Pleasant Grove assisted on the blaze, but the home is a total loss, Peterson said.

Fire investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, but they said it does not appear suspicious.

The woman in critical condition was transported to a local hospital before being taken to the University of Utah Hospital. Peterson said the family told him she was treated for smoke inhalation, but he doesn’t know of other injuries.
