It’s that time of year again, when the joy of summer sleeping in is done, overtaken by the sound of the early morning back-to-school alarm.
For parents with kids of any ages, making sure they are up and ready for school can be a task, especially if they start school at — or before — the break of dawn.
So, which schools in Utah County have the earliest and latest start times? We dug into data for start and end times for all schools in the Alpine, Nebo and Provo school districts at the elementary, middle, junior high and high school level to see who would take the prize for earliest and latest start times.
Earliest start time
There was a two-way tie for the school with the earliest start county-wide, both coming from the Provo City School District. First period at Provo High and Timpview High starts at 7:30 a.m., but before you feel too sorry for them, the final bell rings on regular days at 2:15 p.m.
Latest start times
The start in the county is at several elementary schools in the Alpine School District who run on a track system. Half of the kids go earlier to school and half go later to school. A large majority of Alpine’s 57 elementary schools run on the track system, with the latest start going to Windsor Elementary School in Orem. Late track students at Windsor start at 9:30 a.m. Most of Alpine School District’s schools on the track system start at 9:15 a.m. for the later track.
For schools not using the track system, the latest start in the county is 9:05 a.m. at Foothill Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, Lehi Elementary and Lindon Elementary, all in the Alpine School District.
Earliest and latest releases
If schools start early, it typically means that they will be let out early as well.
Windsor Elementary in Orem, has the latest release time on regular days at 3:45 p.m. for students in the later track. Most schools on Alpine's track system release at 3:30 p.m. Outside of the track system, most elementary school students in the Alpine School District are also released at 3:30 p.m. Two elementary schools in Provo -- Spring Creek and Canyon Crest -- also get out at 3:30 p.m.
The earliest regular day release time is 2:15 p.m. at all high schools in the Provo City and Alpine school districts, with the exception of Polaris High and Independence High. Oak Canyon and Canyon View junior highs, as well as the early tracks from most Alpine district elementary schools also release on regular days 2:15 p.m.
Early out days
Every school in all three districts have one day they let out early for , with the exception of two middle schools in the Provo City School District — Centennial and Dixon — who do late start on Monday. Provo City School District schools and Polaris High in the Alpine School District have early out day on Friday, while Alpine and Nebo districts do early out on Monday.
Polaris High School has the earliest release in the county on early out day, getting out at 12:45 p.m. on Fridays.
Alpine School District
All three districts in Utah County tend to have high schools taking the earliest start times, with middle schools starting a bit later and elementary schools having the latest start times.
In the Alpine School District, elementary schools on the track system start with the earliest track between 7:55 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. and the later track starting between 9:10 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. For elementary schools not on a track system, start times range from 8:40 a.m. to 9:05 a.m.
The start times for junior highs and middle schools in the Alpine School District are either 7:45 a.m or 8:15 a.m. All high schools in the Alpine School District, with the exception of Polaris High, start at 7:45 a.m.
Nebo School District
In the Nebo School District, elementary schools start between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. All of the junior high schools start at 8 a.m. and the high schools start between 7:50 a.m and 7:55 a.m.
Provo School District
Provo’s elementary schools start between 8:20 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. The middle schools start at 8 a.m. or 8:05 a.m. Provo and Timpview high schools start at 7:30 a.m., while Independence High starts at 8:25 a.m.
