The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Friday that its temple in St. George would close later this year.
The temple will officially close Nov. 4, 2019 for major renovations that will be completed in 2022. Renovations will include extensive structural, mechanical, electrical, finish and plumbing work.
The renovation is part of a series of renovations announced in October 2018, where the church will be updating several pioneer-era temples.
The temple in St. George was the first temple completed in Utah and was dedicated in 1877. It was remodeled and rededicated in November 1975.
The closest operating temples are in Cedar City and Las Vegas, though a future temple announced in October will be built in Washington County, Utah.
